In certain areas VC2 and 3 are actually better than 1, like more balanced gameplay, deeper variety and customization, and more classes to choose from. VC3 is also the most challenging of the three.
The main problem with those is that the maps are smaller, and missions are pretty generic and repetitive, so you won't find as many unique situations as in VC1, except for a really few missions. VC2 in particular is waaaay too repetitive and it even requires grinding for certain things.
It's not a big problem, because like you said there's a Japanese voice option; I just wanted to mention it.
In addition to what Lanzagranadas said, VC3 has a better story, and both 2 and 3 do a much better job at fleshing out your squadmates. VC1 felt like there were only 5 characters in the squad; everyone else was just names on a list.
On the other hand, since they were made for handheld rather than console/pc, VC2 and 3 have horrible graphics, tiny maps, and a much more simplistic physics engine. Driving the tank no longer feels like driving an actual tank; it's just moving a polygon box around.
Amen to that. That is pretty much the entire reason I stopped playing VC2. *grumble grumble grinding random drops grumble*
VC3 i didn't like much, mainly because of the small and repitive maps.
Also, not playing VC with mouse + KB is a sin, and VC3 is psp exclusive...
