Melee weapons- yes, Gun- doubt it. Japan has a strict gun law also how a Japanese school girl handle a gun? Heather make sense since the setting is in the US. Maybe they will give her a bow since they have a Archery club.

It's a rural town in the 60s; at least one person there surely had a hunting rifle, and you'll probably pick up someone's service pistol from WW2.
