lost object references tends to happen now and then especially in heavily modified game, so I suspect this is not an issue (unless it happens many many times)

Did you try playing the game in
developer mode? And set the debug log to pause on error. This allows you to see the error when it happen without having to look into long log files. Also allows you to see how many times the same error
