Edit: I'm assuming that's why uranium was mentioned. I'm not sure on the logic there though, you can bring pack animals both ways, though it becomes pretty inefficient to drop pod a bunch of pack animals and uranium.
The point is that farskip can be used to get home much more quickly, alleviating some of the travel time annoyances, but you'll still need to use animals for requests that feature things that a group of regular pawns couldn't carry themselves, hence why I used uranium as an example because it's really heavy.
As for completing trade missions, the best advice I saw above was transport podding someone + the items over, turning the quest in, then farskip back. Otherwise it really isn't all that bad to send out a caravan, especially if you have other trade goods you can bring along. Trading makes the game so much easier, and there are also certain items that are primarily acquired via trading, e.g. Neutroamine, Hyperweave, archotech items, and items that are beyond your current tech base.
Oh, also reinforced barrels have to be bought or acquired in other ways.
