Managing pens
Hi all

I'm curious if I'm missing something. Simple example - I have some chickens (M&F), some goats (M&F) and some sheep (F).

Due to a chicken population explosion I want to separate the chickens by gender, keep a couple of males for when the population drops again but separate.

The goats I want more of, so they need to be together. But I imagine soon I will be separating them too.

The sheep are all one gender so who cares where they are.

I'm getting my head twisted trying to achieve this. If I set up pen 2 and say 'male chickens only' they stay in pen 1, as pen 1 has to accept chickens (or the females leave) and males (or the goats leave).

Is there perhaps a mod that lets me dictate specific numbers of animals/genders in each pen? Like with auto-slaughter?

Or will I need lots of pens?

I suppose thinking about it, the issue is getting the pens right. I could have a M pen, a F pen and a mixed pen, but then that would mean I can't control the animals well enough - maybe I'd like all the male chickens in a pen, with some female muffalo as the chickens don't eat much, but that would mean I had to make the pen mixed which would mean female chickens were put in it.

I hope I'm getting my point across, apologies if there is a simple way to fix this!

Just put the male muffalos with the male chickens. I usually just have 2 pens one for males and one for females. If there is a gate/door between the two pens there is no need for a third mixed pen, just leave the gate/door always open to breed. You can have as many pens as you like though.

Slightly tangential, but connected, question if I may hijack.

How do I keep 2 pens separate from each other but share a common barn area (for kibble and sleeping)?
I want horses in pen 1, so select just horse (both genders) for that and exclude horses from pen 2. But all animals, horse, goats, muffalos share all the pens. I have a barn that opens into pen 1 and pen 2 via 2 different animal flaps. The barn is further separated internally with another animal flap.

Also, the food amount that pen 1 and pen 2 say is present is the same, which cannot be true as pen 1 is much smaller than pen2.

Sorry, long question - shorter one is - can 2 different pens be connected to the same barn?

But then if I add female muffalos it will also force female chickens etc...

I think I'm overthrowing this.

They are the same pen. I don't think there is a way to do what you are trying to do, maybe a mod IDK. This seems like the sort of thing that would put your colonist in a loop of roping animals again and again.

Male muffalos and male chickens. Female muffalos and female chickens. Or you can do 4 separate pens, or any combo of 3. I think you are overthinking it also.
