Safest ways to deal with Metalhorrors?
I'm soon to attune the Monolith to level 2 and I'm already looking for ways to control dangerous anomalies I know the existance of. The only things I have on the Metalhorrors though is, like- have at least two doctors (or a Paramedic, but that one's a lot more expensive to obtain) and place everybody in some sort of quarantine bay where it will be hard for the horrors to spread through meals, then have the two doctors test everybody and then themselves. That isn't either fast or efficient though and speed seems to be the key in that event. Now- I haven't encountered them myself yet and the wiki provides little information as of now so I'd be more than glad to recieve some help from someone more knowledgable on the subject.

So some basics: Metalhorror infections spread through social interactions and melee attacks. These can be medical checkups, feeding prisoners, sleeping with a partner, social fights, or other similar actions. Some are much more likely to cause an infection than others. Medical checkups seem to be the most likely to spread infections.

1) Infections come from somewhere, usually melee contact with a hostile anomaly, social fights with guests, or new recruits. Try to keep a mental tab of who has been in melee and if you can remember who, arrest them and interrogate them.

2) Don't use your doctors to test for the infection initially. Infected doctors can rapidly spread it throughout your colony.

3) Arrest everyone near the grey flesh that drops and interrogate them. Interrogations will not only reveal if they're a metalhorror, but will also reveal who infected them and how if you check their health tab.

4) The metalhorrors can infect multiple people before you find out they're in your colony. Don't assume that it's just 1.

5) If you've found a metalhorror infected colonist, arrest their spouse as well.

Regarding points 2 and 3, paramedic mechs can test for infection and won’t lie, so use them to check.

Oh good point. For everyone with BioTech it's time to keep at least one paramedic bot on staff.

get a mod or disable them

metal horros forces a player to be highly xenophic and create bases that limit social interaction

which is great if you like that sort of thing but terrible if you actually want to play the game

Alright, I don't mind anomalies that are stressful to deal with, but this is just... too much for me. When buying Anomaly I really didn't expect this DLC to turn into paranoia simulator the second you get the Monolith to level 2. And you know what? I'm not gonna do it. They went way too overboard with this one.
...guess this is where my Anomaly playthrough ends, then.

To each their own.

Ghouls. Safest way to deal with anything is ghouls.

I mean... it would be SOMEWHAT fine if they couldn't spread through meals (which they can from what I've heard), but as it is (at least if that's true), can't the infection just keep going forever because of infected meals? ...no, I can't deal with that...
FourGreenFields Apr 16, 2024 @ 5:40am
Well, like... you could burn all your meals, no?

Though I'm not sure if it's "fine". Depends on how "random" metalhorror infections are. If you can e.g. just keep your cook(s) and doctor(s) out of melee combat with some types of entities and quarantine new arrivals... that's fine imo (though still needs an option to disable, not sure if the scenario editor has something for that). If that's not enough it sounds like it has a chance to turn into "rock falls, everyone dies".

They can't spread through meals and they don't spread quickly. Without an infected doctor actively spreading the infection through medical checkups it can take weeks for an infection to hop. The trick is figuring out at least 1 infected individual so you can reveal them and end the infestation.

Oh. That makes it... a Tiny bit more bearable. How quickly does the Grey Flesh spawn and is there an alert for it though?

They can spread through meals or wounds (e.g., surgery, being physically attacked, eating infected food).

The game pauses and alerts when grey flesh drops, so you can see everyone in the area around it as soon as it's spotted. It doesn't drop too often, once every 3 or 4 days in my experience.

Interesting. At the very least, I've had my chefs infected and no infections spread through any of the meals, so the infection rate isn't particularly high.
