Storing rice in freezer
Any reason my pawns won't store rice in my freezer?

I highlight pawn, right-click the rice, and pick "Prioritize hauling rice."

But the pawn stores it in Stockpile Zone 1, which has all Food disallowed (red x).

I want it to put it into Stockpile Zone 3, where my freezer is, which has all Food allowed (green check), and only Food allowed (also: Allow Fresh). Rice is explicitly on this list: Foods - Raw Food - Vegetarian - Rice. No mods are used.

Thanks.

Your settings are off. I have no trouble doing it. For more constructive help, you'd need to post screenshots or video.

nvm. I had shelves in Stockpile Zone 1, and I didn't turn off "Food" in each of the shelves. I guess I had to do that in addition to turning off "Food" in the zone itself.

Once I manually turned off "Food" in every shelf, they began to haul the rice to the freezer.

Thanks for your help!
You can double click on one Shelf and link their settings. That way you don't have to change them for every single shelf but rather only one, the linked ones get changed alongside.

Why would you want to freeze rice?

Rice goes bad. Even IRL. Especially whole grain rice.

just like whole grain that also goes bad pretty quickly im suprised they didn't do a dlc that focuses on the farming and cooking.

But will you ever actually hit that time limit realistically in game? Unless you are wildly over producing even building an over winter stockpile it'll still be good unfrigerated. It lasts ages and you should be using it frequently. Both corn and rice last long enough it truly is pointless. If any ever goes bad it's actually useful letting you know to scale back production as it's just unessisary raiders.

It's not an addition ; when you build a shelf on the zone, you actually shrink the zone so that you can build the shelf, so only the shelf settings apply. Try deconstructing the shelf and you'll see there's no zone underneath

I refrigerate corn every single game. Ideally I want to survive a long-lasting event AND use the surplus to make lavish meals if needed. You can churn through thousands of veggie units in a few days if you start producing veggie lavish meals, and 30 days to spoil isn't that long

Churn through it is exactly part of why it's unessisary. It's easy to go through stuff quickly if anything is at risk of going bad.

I use a mod that sets shelves to have empty settings by default. That way you have to purposefully set them and they aren't immediately filled with stuff you don't want there.

Yes, I'm freezing rice to increase the shelf life. I realize it's probably unnecessary. I'll move it out when I need space in the freezer for higher-priority things. I just didn't like seeing it deteriorate.

I'm still learning the basics as I go. I'm currently trying to reduce the resistance of a prisoner so that I can recruit her into the colony.

I find the game is more fun if I ask quick questions from time to time, rather than trying to absorb giant wiki pages. Discovering stuff on my own in the game, as much as I can, helps me remember the info. But sometimes I get stuck.

Thanks for your help, everyone!

Thanks, Veylox. I didn't know that!

This may be useful: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=945085502
You may also find it useful to set the priority levels of your storage spaces, based upon how important it is to have stuff everywhere.

So for example, I might have a few storage locations set up like this:
warehouse floor: Low priority
Freezer floor: Normal priority
Freezer shelves: Preferred priority
stove-adjacent shelves: Important priority (so that my cooks don't have to walk as far, while my haulers can bring stuff to them)
and leave Critical free for emergency situations. :-)

This way if the shelves get full, stuff can overflow onto the floor - and if the floor of the freezer gets full, harvested crops will still be brought indoors but later moved to a better storage location.

Thanks so much. I've added it to my Favorites, and may check it out soon.
