Cozy?
How's this game for someone looking for a more i guess chill relaxing experience?

Is the building in this game anything to ride home about? I know its 2D but I'm wondering if I can create buildings/structures that are aesthetically pleasing.

Thanks ahead of time.

It's 2D, so apart from some visual tricks you won't get to do the same type of structures as minecraft. More like Terraria if it was top-down. But there are a lot of people who go for themed runs and craft their entire map so that it looks like some type of medieval village running along a river etc, there's certainly enough different walls/floors/carpets/decorations of all kind to create some stuff, and it can all be multiplied with DLCs. There's just no real incentive to do any of it, you have to be willing to make your own fun, the game will only rarely ask you to build something specific-looking

Difficulty can be adapted to be a relaxing experience. I’m doing a peaceful playthrough right now and I’m liking it. There are some events that are challenging - solar flares cause blackouts, some wild animals turn rabid and attack people - but I think you can edit even those events out.

I wouldn't recommend RimWorld for a cozy builder experience. There are other similar games that create that atmosphere better and in more unique ways. RimWorld's building system isn't bad, but it's just not designed for this.

The base-building is nothing to write home about. Everything's basic, and everything has a purpose. It's minimalist, in many ways.

That's not to say I haven't seen visually pleasing bases in vanilla, but they're rare, and illogical. If you want spectacle, you'll have to go with mods.

Mods... or violence. Tragedy and chaos is half the fun.

The only thing cozy about the game is the seasons, which also want to kill you.

There's mods for everything. Now would be a rough time to get the game specifically for the mods, with the new update out, but there's nothing they don't add.

If you want a more cozy game with a similar aesthetic, along with clan tartans, you might also consider Clanfolk.

Clanfolk is much more focused on the builder aspect, and doesn't need defenses since it doesn't have the fighting aspect of Rimworld... but you also don't have mods in Clanfolk yet, so if you're looking to add alien waifu breeding (or whatever), then you'd probably want Rimworld with the difficulty turned down.

Clanfolk isn't as far along the dev cycle as Rimworld, but the dev has been good so far & it's definitely in a playable state... but I also don't dis-recommend Rimworld, either. (i.e. "Why not both?")

Mods can make RW a lot cozier-looking. Gloomy's furniture mod in particular is an old favorite for me. Adds in some prettier walls and such too. Vanilla Furniture: Expanded series has some nice picks as well.

As for making the game less violent? A little while spent poking around in the custom difficulty and custom scenario windows can make it pretty damned peaceful.

A second recommendation for Clanfolk if you like the general gameplay of RimWorld but want it in a non-violent and extremely pretty (on the current experimental branch, not all the terrain changed are live on the main branch yet) game. Do note that it is a bit more focused on survival and requires more actual management and planning compared to RimWorld on peaceful mode, so if "chill building with little friction" is a high priority, RimWorld on peaceful mode may work better for you.

It can be chill if you play on the easiest difficulty and save scum when things go wrong. But playing this game on normal or higher without save scumming makes the game exceedingly difficult, after all this is a game where loosing is part of fun of it. Things will go wrong, and things that go wrong will start chain reactions of things going wrong which will lead to an implosion of your colony.

It's not designed as a cozy game and, if you can turn off threats to make it "cozy", it doesn't work very well as a cozy game.
