I have no idea about the meta but I would assume larger maps a better as raid take longer to reach your base.
Although, in my last playthrough, I started on a massive tile, and put my base at the very top of the map, and didn't even go near the bottom of the map for the first couple years, since without modified move speed or skipdoors, it would take 1/2 the day to get there.
When the OCD plays you.
Exactly ! Larger maps do have advantage in preparing for outside raid, however the offset is that caravans need more time to drag to the end of the map (or back to the base once they're back).
Currently, Im on the large medium map, having 16 colonists and that's the biggest I ever had. I did think about doing a Large map next time, but my biggest concern are caravans and their map movement.

You can also do it by abandoning your current home then editing the map size in your save file manually, and then resettling a new tile.
I would have preferred the smaller maps even more if it weren't for the fact that raids, mech clusters, and sieges would be right at my doorstep if not literally right on top of me, incidents like defoliator ships would be hard to leave alone for very long, resources and buildable area would be extremely limited even for a space miser like me, and the fact that some structures and rooms demand large areas by default (I use a mod to adjust things like bedroom sizes for impressiveness, but this doesn't reduce the space requirements for throne rooms, noble bedrooms, or ballrooms/galleries (VE Empire) afaik. Then there's Rimfeller to consider.).
