Pros:
- Shield regens faster both naturally and when knocked out
- Mech itself has more health and better armor
- Less micromanagement needed
- Shield protects a huge area
Cons:
- Less shield health (300 vs 500)
- Slow as ♥♥♥♥
- Less melee and ranged damage (also lower range on its turret)
- Shield protects a huge area (which causes it to take unnecessary hits and go down way faster)
Overall the pros are really flimsy while some cons are dealbreakers for me
IMO it either needs buffs to the shield health or move speed or it needs to cost 4 bandwidth, same as the centipedes. Yes there are worse mechs (hello pikeman) but it's easily the worst of the large mechs and not worth the current bandwidth cost
The centurion charge blaster turret has a range of 44.9, the legionary needle launcher has a range of 24.9.
Huge range works for the low shield pack because that shield is invincible (with time being the only enemy), with huge range and only 50% more health than a single legionary shield it goes down so fast, often eating shots that never would have hit anything.
@Astasia
How often are you attacking and breaching walls though? I'm defending 95% of the time I play Rimworld but maybe I'm in the minority. Also how are your centurions keeping up with the rest of the army? It's one of the slowest things in the entire game that can move.
That I did not know, I have never seen it actually do anything from range so I thought maybe it had a low range version of the turret
It's basically the equivalent of an MMO tank. It's not meant to dish out damage, it's meant to soak it up.
I don't think you are in the minority, most people probably do not use the Centurion for its designed purpose, it's a bit of a niche role. It's still a fairly well defined role though and it has clear benefits for that purpose.
While the centurion is moving you can move your colonist or other mechs up to the front of the shield, take a shot/burst or two as the centurion catches up, then move them forward again. I'm not claiming this is ever something I have done, there was a preview clip for the centurion released by the devs and that is how it was being used, and all the stats and mechanics on it line up with and are designed around that purpose. A mobile (if slow) weapons platform designed for pushing into enemies while keeping things inside the shield safe. Even if you don't attack bases it could still have use with dealing with sieges or clusters.
