I would probably recommend not touching the monolith as a new player to the game, the more advanced anomaly content isn't just more difficult it's also generally wildly different from normal gameplay.
So there will be no new content without activating the full fury of the DLC's difficulty?
To answer the question of difficulty, to a new or unskilled player, Anomaly would be quite difficult, yes, especially in the latter half of the story.
What anomaly asks of you is stepping outside habits that are easy to get stuck in with experience and a bit of reading comprehension. A newer player already learning is likely to actually be in a good learning mindset already which is the main thing anomaly needs to be beaten. Just have an emp grenade and a moltov before awakening it and you are fine. Or the lvl1 psycast stun which is exceedingly powerful for anomaly.
