Question about Anomaly DLC
Should I be avoiding this as a new player? From what I've seen it makes the game significantly more difficult and adds much more punishing events/raids. Am I misunderstanding this or can the DLC's be disabled individually after purchase?

The DLCs function exactly like mods and can be disabled in their entirety from the Mods menu. Like other posters have mentioned, though, Anomaly is unique and comes with its own game settings. You can play the Anomaly story by activating the Monolith, you can have Ambient Horror which removes the Monolith but has Anomaly Events, or you can soft disable Anomaly itself which keeps its items and content, but removes Anomaly Events.
To answer the question of difficulty, to a new or unskilled player, Anomaly would be quite difficult, yes, especially in the latter half of the story.

If you just don't interact with the monolith, or use the anomaly scenario, then the more difficult content doesn't trigger. So you don't need to turn the DLC off, but that can be done through Steam or your modlist if you want.

I would probably recommend not touching the monolith as a new player to the game, the more advanced anomaly content isn't just more difficult it's also generally wildly different from normal gameplay.

So there will be no new content without activating the full fury of the DLC's difficulty?

You can get a few anomalies things without awakening the monolith. It's also a lower chance compared to awakening.
You will get some new things like Shamblers and serums being sold by traders but the hard stuff from the DLC will not show up without activating the monolith.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

I honestly disagree, many anomaly raids are easier than their human equivalent. What many do require is reading the messages that show up when they appear which often hints how to beat them. Heck more than one you can just close a door and leave them be. The only one that is scarier is the devourers which need some sort of stun, nausea, or fire.

What anomaly asks of you is stepping outside habits that are easy to get stuck in with experience and a bit of reading comprehension. A newer player already learning is likely to actually be in a good learning mindset already which is the main thing anomaly needs to be beaten. Just have an emp grenade and a moltov before awakening it and you are fine. Or the lvl1 psycast stun which is exceedingly powerful for anomaly.
