RimWorld

RimSort or RimPy, which one should be used nowadays?
Well, hello! As many of you know, RimWorld modding nowadays has become huge! And many of us use RimPy to manage our mods because... well, RimWorld base Mod Manager isn't all that good! However, RimPy has been abandoned for a while and an alternative which is open source, called RimSort, has recently been gaining popularity!

Now, I am not here to argue which one is better as I am not really knowledgeable enough in favor of one or the other, I am just here to ask which one I should be using! Should I use old reliable RimPy which I've used practically all my time or should I finally do the switch to RimSort? The main advantage of RimSort seems to be it's database, which seems to be up to date.

If I'm going to be completely honest, I never used a mod manager for RimWorld (but it is kinda annoying to use the base one). That said, I suppose you can try Rimsoft and see if you like it or not. If not, then go back to using RimPy.

RimPy still works completely fine, and for bonus points the community around it doesn't spend their forum time insulting the people that dare to use something else.
Like you just did. Yeah ok.

Can you please explain for me how I insulted anyone? Was this not you?

Wow, all these RimPy recs = people with modlists that likely are poised to implode.

Do you subscribe to the 'pointing out behavior is exactly the same as having that behavior yourself' newsletter? Because it's really not. ^^ Like, really, really not.

Just tried switching to RimSort.
It messed up my load order completely so that Rimworld disabled all mods on startup.
Now I'm not discarding the possibility that I made a mistake setting it up.
But RimPy works fine for me out of the box. So yeah, RimPy it is...

I use RimPy and have no complaints regarding its usage. I prefer it to RimSort

I think one of the reasons why I prefer RimPy over RimSort is how simple it is, it's just put your mods, sort and press play. 99% of times it all will work out fine.

The RimPy "database" has been mostly useless always, RimPy by default understands prerequisites and can order things correctly based on that, and mod order for basically anything else doesn't really matter because of the way RimWorld loads mods and delays patching. As long as a mod defines the correct prerequisite then RimPy is going to sort it correctly even if it says it's not in the database. There are very few exceptions to this, and none I can recall and list offhand.

I see no reason to switch away from RimPy, it works perfectly fine for me and is what I have installed and am used to using, so I'm not going to bother looking into and figuring out something new. RimSort might be fine, and might be worth grabbing if you don't have RimPy yet, but I can't imagine it being worth taking extra steps for.
RimSort has significantly faster texture optimization and dds file conversion. RimPy will take over an hour on some computers, RImSort takes about 10 minutes or less.

Not a feature I've ever used honestly, or see any reason to use. My game loads in about a minute with 200ish mods, I'm not going to mess around with converting textures to speed that up by a few seconds. Realistically that shouldn't be a significant factor in load times anyway, it sounds more like a placebo to me, I think in most people's cases the image files being loaded by the game from mods is going to be like 100-300mb total, if that, which is essentially nothing. The vast majority of the loading process for the game is mod patching.

Rimpy works with one or two clicks. Rimsort is tedious and screws up my mod order everytime. Even the texture conversion in Rimpy works well.

I couldn't get Rimsort to do anything I wanted honestly.

I currently have 794 mods, including NSFW mods, and use RimPy. My game isn't 100% stable (because if it was I'd be worshipping at least two divine pantheons) but I can generally play it without serious issues and with no red-error-logs. I've never used RimSort and *probably* never will (never say never, you never know). You don't *need* the texture optimization stuff if you've got a solid rig and you can easily access the actual mod folders if you want to alter the mod somehow (RVE - Classical, I always change the research times from 1200 to an assortment of times that are more reasonable for what's being researched).

Point is, RimPy seems to work just fine for what I need, and probably what you need as well. And it is simple to use - "Subscribe/Download Mod -> Move to Active -> Sort -> Play".

(And yes, I do have some RimWorld in my Mods, thanks for asking. I know I have an issue, but I always see a neat new mod and think "ah, it looks cool, what's the worst that could happen?" Sue me.)

I feel so identified with this, I just see a new cool mod and I end up adding it not caring about the potential consequences XD
I just use RimSort for updating mods, then launch and do other managing via RimWorld itself.

Rimpy is such a terrible name, really awful. Can't we have a good name like Moddy McModface?

I think it's a reference to RenPy which is a popular game engine. But I think it's also just common for apps made with python to add Py to the name.

So in addition to being terrible and awful, it is also utterly unimaginative and worst of all, common. Well, that settles it; it is simply inappropriate to use this ''Rimpy''. I haven't felt so morally outraged since that Steven Fry served chocolate eggs in tinsel wrappers.
