True, but something is only a different species if they are no longer reproductively compatible anymore.
Horses and Donkeys are entirely different species and can still reproduce.

Not really, mules are usually infertile. Same with Tigers and Lions, they can make a Liger, but that's also generally infertile. That is not successful reproduction.

There are exceptions, coyotes and wolves can create fertile offspring, but that's probably more a case of the species being defined before the current terminology of species was set.

Yeah but in this case if you got the gene splicing tech even if they can't make babies the old fashioned way you got the tech to make them with science anyways lol. I mean at that point your gonna have tech to grow an embro and decide if you want to raise it as a baby or leave it in there for less perk choices lol

Horses and Donkeys can reproduce with each other all they like. As do Lions and Tigers, though not bears, oh my. Thats the point. It doesn't matter if their offspring are infertile, the fact they had offspring in the first place means they were compatible. :P And they're different species.

In fact, it is BECAUSE they are different species that their offspring can't reproduce. Mismatched chromosome numbers and all that.

Anyway, this was regards to rimworld cannibalism. The humans are still humans, even when modified. And I bet they'll still have natural births with each other regardless of genetic alteration. So... It's still cannibalism any way you slice it.

I guess I will clarify then, and quote wikipedia here, "A species is often defined as the largest group of organisms in which any two individuals of the appropriate sexes or mating types can produce fertile offspring, typically by sexual reproduction."

Genemodded humans in RimWorld, with any genes it seems like, can produce fertile offspring with each other. Some of those powerful designer genes wont be passed on, some of the more natural mutations might be, but it means all xenohumans are still part of the human species. It's in the name after all, they are still humans.

Oh talking about infertility.

Rather than increased metabolism (though for something like fire spewing it kinda makes sense) maybe the more you gene mod the more infertile (unclonable) your pawn should get? I know it's not much of a detriment to some but it will prevent you from spamming certain genes to an extent.

If anyone is familiar with the gourmand trait, it's really sucky, it's not the fact that they eat 50% more, hell thats barely an inconvenience, but the fact that they run on different eating schedules to everyone else and will often run into starvation mode because of it with the mood downsides to boot.

That's why gourmands suck. I reckon you'll get the same annoying problem with too much gene modding. It's not the increased metabolism that will be annoying but the fact that they'll run out of sync and run into silly starvation moments that lead to unnecessary mental breaks. I'd rather them all go infertile or have trouble getting babies / clones that die from their excessive gene modding than dietary problems lol.

I imagine the increased metabolism stuff will just make nuclear (or reprocessor) stomachs more appealing. Eating once every 2 days is kind of crap because you lose 50% of the uptime on impressive dining room and fine/lavish meal buffs. With +100% metabolism from a bunch of good genemodded traits and x0.25 metabolism from nuclear stomachs, eating once a day and being able to keep full uptime on dining room and meal mood buffs is probably going to be pretty sweet. Assuming that's how it maths out.

If you make a big super fat strong ogre, you are required to start the game alone, with the ideology precept that makes everyone hate you, and in a swamp biome.

Maybe with a donkey if you feel up for it.
