There's a door locking mod that I believe excludes guests from going through doors. I think it's just called Locks.

There's also a few mods that dictate where visitors put their animals or hang out themselves. I like the one that adds an animal hitch spot and the one that adds a trade spot.

But yeah, the door locking mod has the least cheese temptation potential( unless you deliberately lock them in). It's a good mod.

Or you can do the usual mod-free alternative by providing a table with stools so they dine outside instead.

i just build a dedicated trader area and use one of the trade spot mods

Get the trading spot mod. Set a trading spot in your animal pen. Provide some cheap, probably stone seating and tables so they'll eat there, with the animals they are.

wow, i didnt even think of this....i suppose i could put a table and chairs right next to the "Trading Spot" -- that solves the problem?

Yes. They'll run to the nearest eating spot when they're hungry, and usually that means your dining room. And the main trader will bring all their filthy animals with them, who have saved all their excrement for the shiniest floor they can find. Give them a place to eat closer to where they are, and they'll use it. Just in case you get two caravans at once, I'd advise seating for something like 12-16 filthy caravaneers. 2-3 2x1 tables with some stools should do fine.
