if you so desperately need a virtual pat on your shoulder... there should be something with achievements in the workshop...

I believe achievements are ruled out by the dev.

Badges, I'm not sure he has mentioned a yes or no on the matter. Those are slightly different in that they don't affect game play, Ludeon would have to implement Steam trading cards to get badges up and running, if I'm not mistaken.

If they have said anything about this and I missed it, someone please correct me.
I wonder how much money is lost without having achievements for users that enjoy collecting said achievements, perhaps the studio should hold a user profit-loss survey.

I can't imagine people not buying a game they'd really want to play because it doesn't have digital pats on the back...

You would be surprised, but not so sure about the average percentage (could be low).
You can't do a cost-benefit analysis where the only quantified value is a benefit. How much in future DLC purchases do they lose by reworking the development strategy around chasing the chievo dragon? What does a betrayal of the core promise of the game, that there are no one right ways to play, do to the company's future prospects generally?

But also, cost-benefit schema are a really stupid thing to do to art, and Rimworld is an art project first.

Dev has basically said that does not affect his decision.

I'm just curious about maximizing profits.

Right. And apparently the integrity of the game is more important to him. The "no achievements" policy has been brought up countless times, and with the same "you could make more money" argument, and he has always said no.

Well, with one exception, apparently to put it on console, it was required. So he HAD to do it there or they wouldn't allow it on the console. Not sure if that is Xbox, PS, or both...

But if you have to play Rimworld with official Achievements, that is the way to do it.
