You know nothing of SNOW, Jon ...
Well. How do you make your cleaning colonists remove snow? I know the basic, paint areas where snow should be removed. Except that they always prefer to clean a spot within the base, and won't clean snow. I guess that's because snow on paths are further than dirt spots to clean within the base.

We are back to my other thread question on what determines which task a colonist will do, and it seems it is 'nearest first'.

So two possible work around I can think about, but not very satisfying:

1. Create a complex area that describe the paths to clear from snow, add also there the bedroom of the janitor and dining room and restrict the colonist to this area, so he is forced to only clean snow.

2. Don't bother and create covered passages so that snow don't fall on paths!

Some pawn behavior and performance mods disable snow cleaning while the snow is coming down. If it's still snowing, wait to see if the snow gets removed after the weather changes.

Maybe a mod doing something there idk. They should actually be targeting the snow first regardless of distance IIRC. Does it do or say anything when manually prioritize a pawn to do the job? You could roof if you want but that doesn't look as cool.

I'll need to double check if there was no snowing when I tried. For the rest, the colonist clean the base, not the snow if I prioritize cleaning.

Cleaning filth and clearing snow are entirely different tasks under the cleaning work type. This isn't made very clear in game, but most work types consist of 2-10+ different jobs, and within that work type they have their own priority assignment. A mod like fluffy's Work Tab will allow you to expand the base jobs and look inside to see the sub-jobs, and even change those sub jobs individually to give them higher or lower priorities. In this case though clearing snow is a higher priority than cleaning filth, so they will always clear snow first when that jobs is available. I don't think it's a mod that prevents them from clearing snow while it's snowing though, that's just vanilla behavior otherwise they'd get stuck in a loop for the entire duration of the snow storm.

I was considering adding Fluffy work mod indeed, but you say it would not change the issue. I'll look again at the issue for my next gaming session. Thanks.

If you’re ok with mods I’d recommend adding Fluffy’s Work Tab. Even if you don’t use it to adjust individual priorities, simply being able to see the priorities of the sub tasks helped me understand points of confusion.

In this specific case you could temporarily disable cleaning entirely while leaving snow clearing on.

You can also set clearing to a top priority while leaving cleaning at the normal setting so that pawns prioritize clearing over all/most other things.

These are the settings my folks used when I was a kid.

I'm already using Fluffy mod and playing with this kind of priorities :-) Not sure it is working though.
When you were a kid? Meaning what? Intriguing!

Cover those pathways. There are much better uses for a pawns time than sweeping snow off the ground.
My paths are usually 3 tiles wide with a column every 12 or so tiles. Some lights to get rid of the darkness debuff in the heavy traffic areas. If beauty is an issue plant some flowers along the side of the path.

I'm inclined to think you are right Monty, cleaning snow takes efforts best use elsewhere.

I mean shoveling the driveway and out to the barn was priority 1. Bed rest was priority 2.

Yes, I grew up long long ago, in a galaxy without snowblowers.

That's ok, I'm past half a century too ;-)

^-- This.

Those covered walkways will also come in very handy during Acid Rain/etc events, too. :)

Forcing the player to have to compensate for embedded inefficiencies is a purposefully supported game mechanic in Rimworld. Luckily, there are in-game tools for the player to use instead of just sitting there, screaming at the monitor... "Covered walkways" are one of those "tools." BUT, even there, the player has to manually construct them out of simpler components - Wall sections/roofs. Pretty wonderful design, IMO. (The new "Support Columns" are... an anathema to me... )

And, over a half-century here, too. We're everywhere!

Covered walkways have a problem though - pawns may complain that they are not getting enough outside exposure.
