Stop chopping the trees!
Digged into a mountain - and they regard the area as "inside" - So I had to remove the roof.

I planted an Anima Tree there - for the esthetics - but they keep chopping down all of the trees there. Can someone tell me why?! I can't make them stop except blocking of the entrance...

In vanilla colonists automatically harvest anything in a grow zone once they reach 100% grown, including trees. Remove the grow zone to stop that behavior. Or you could try this mod to disable harvesting on the zone:

Yeah thanks for that - I already had the Grow zone removed - but the area was considered a roofless room. And who wants trees inside their homes...

The only other time colonists should remove a tree is if you are building something on that tile. Is the area is designated to build a roof over it? They might keep removing it to try and rebuild the roof. Try using the remove roof tool on the tiles above the trees.

Already done so - still chopped - was still considered a room. Have to deal with the Scream for 2 more days now - but still - not paying attention is dangerous. Even my colonist not meant to do woodcutting or building - 5 pawns went there to clean that big "room" "roofless cave" of trees. I only got the notification and I was like - ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥. It worked for my main Anima tree (which I'm not really using - as Magic of Rimworld is doing my job) But the other one didn't work for some reason.

I don't really understand what's going on then, it's possible you have some sort of mod changing mechanics. Being a room or mostly roofed shouldn't have any effect normally. Like you can use a "chimney" method to grow trees "indoors" in extreme maps, where a large temperature controlled room has a few roof tiles removed so trees can grow under them. If the growing area is removed the trees are left alone.

I did a quick test where I built a small room around an anima tree to see if it had special mechanics, but as long as I made sure to mark the one roof tile above it as a remove roof area then colonists left it alone.

Edit: There's a difference between a remove roof area and removing a roof. I imagine you used dev mode to remove the overhead mountain, but completing a "room" around that area causes an automatic build roof area unless it had been previously set to an ignore or remove roof area. When colonists go to build a roof they will chop down any trees below it first.

I didn't use the Dev mode - only once for a bugged Caravan.

And it was a natural generated part of the map inside the mountain - seemed like a holy place and was fit for the Anima Tree.

I set the entire area in there to - "remove roof" - not "no roof" area and canceled all chopping activities there.

(Edit: they already starting roofing the "room")

I might test it out later again to see how I could get it to work again but that there is an issue like that to begin with is... well.

If you set a remove roof area around the tree itself they shouldn't try and chop it unless they already were on their way to do so. Drafting and undrafting should fix that.

Command's were canceled - not drafted but by the canel task. Let's leave the situation open as I have to experiment further - later on. Not in the mood to play Rimworld today - yet.
