I personally recommend an Ablative Squirrel Shield, IF you can take the FPS hit from having so many animals.
Sure, most of them will die in the resulting battle, but hey at least there will be a feast when it's over. You also get pigskin as a bonus. Rest well Bacon, you did a good job. Now be a good meal.
You can only "Order" animals to attack enemies if they've been trained in "Release."
However, raiders and other enemies will attack any animal/pet asset belonging to the player. This will result in defensive behavior when it's triggered, which means many/most animals will respond aggressively.
So, what players do who use animals that can't be trained in "Release" is to quickly force them into a Zone where the enemy will be or can easily see/target for attack. When these normally peaceful animals get there, they're attacked by the enemy and that will trigger aggression.
For Boomalope types, it's the "splosions" and raiders on fire that the players want. :) So, they'll typically order most of their 'splodey" animals there and hold back a few breeders. (I've done that a few times long ago, but I don't normally breed them.)
I don't use this tactic frequently. I've also not used it with animals that have no Agression/Revenge mechanics, so I can't say what's going on with "chicken attacks" and the like. The only animals I've used in this way are those that can't be trained in Release and have a Revenge mechanic, like Muffalo. (Because they are big targets and easy for raiders to hit as well as acting as mobile shields.)

Animals will flee if they don’t have “guard” or aggression. So a muffalo will stay in its zone, but not a chicken. I think this mechanic was changed somewhere along the line such that untamable animals like squirrels and chickens can’t be used to attack effectively but I remember an xwynns 1.0 series where he used squirrels. Untamable animals can still be used as effective distractions, but IMO using meat shields of animals not trained for combat is exploity.
