Mods are deactivated on start and will not enable.
Ive restarted the game a few times now and each with the same result. I loaded a game and it shows no mods loaded but shows the list I had for that game. I load from this list and the game restarts with the mods enabled.. except, they do not enable despite this re initialization. Ive enabled them normally via loading the mod list in the mod menu.. still, no change.

I had been playing just fine for hours the day before, the only new mod being the Insectoids 2 mod and I started a new colony so mod conflicts should be low.. but nothing should outright disable and keep them disabled.

I haven't reinstalled as I don't know how to preserve gamefiles and a friend has a playthrough I don't want to ruin.

Any advice?

My game has actually started doing the same/similar since yesterday.

Game starts with no mods on, I turn on the modlist I've been using for a month and yesterday, no new mods, it'll sit on a blank screen infinitely after trying to load a save or will go back to main menu with mods turned off again.

So the fact I'm not alone makes it seem like a game update happened that broke stuff or more likely an update to a popular mod updated and broke things.

I did have a mod update according to my downloads a bit before I tried to play, been trying to figure outvwhich mod in particular downloaded.

If game detect critical errors during startup - mod list can be reset. May be some mods updated automatically by steam and something now broken?

Any idea to see exactly what mod may have updated? I can only see "Rimworld: Workshop Content" in the downloads.

I think this is outside of mods, like a issue with the game itself? Someone said they reinstalled and it worked.. another i read from years ago said he just kept trying and it worked, as in starting, restarting, enabling, etc etc..

Open you mod subscription list in workshop, there is filter in right side. Filter by name, by subscription date, by last change etc.
Also try to verify game files. This check game installation and also check mods for corrupted files (some times workshop push updates to you with errors)

Thank you! I did verify files several times so I'll track which mod it is and go from there.

Verifying files sadly did not help my issue.
That happens to me too. I even uninstalled and reinstalled the game a few times and the first time I can manage to get to the main menu in vanilla form, but after the mods are downloaded the game refuses to load. The only mod I know that caused a lot of issues recently is Alpha Animals, but even removing that mod doesn't fix the game.

I'm thinking about unsubscribing to all mods and resubbing, but if I do that I would probably stop playing Rimworld for a few months.

I used advice here to track the updated mod when my game broke to these two. From the VFE comments from dev: @Daddy Down Under : Load order issue. Alpha Animals needs to be after this now

I do have them, but the issue is that when I go activate mods now and it does its reset, they are still not enabled. i can't enable any mods at all.

I'll try it now and just install like one mod and run the game. I haven't been able to load my save game so i didn't mess with it further than all this.

playing around with it, it now keeps my list loaded. I removed 3 star wars mods I forgot were enabled for starters.. this seemed to make the mods stick. looking through I think one called the rimworld westernization project was having issues with the helldivers 2 add on for the insectoids 2 mod.

Well, unsubbing of all my mods "fixed" the problem. The thing is that I might have to resub little by little to them and they are almost 500 mods.

I think I'm going to take a break of rimworld for a little while.

Edit: Because, of course, a 1.6 isn't planned on the short term, isn't it?

For me it was Rocketman not being at the very bottom of the mod list. Somehow Autosort got that wrong!
Thats why I loaded, all mods were removed. Then I installed Fluffy Mod manager after all expansions and Harmony before.
No other mods. Restart. Drag all mods from left to right and thus enable. Then drag Rocketman to the very bottom. Did it!

The thing is that just having the mods downloaded makes me unable to start the game. Maybe I'll try your method tomorrow or just wait a few months until the eventual update comes.

I reverted to last version of the 4.x branch and I have no issues
