False advertising?
I'm quickly realising that this game has no storyteller whatsoever. The game description says AI Storyteller, the videos have voice over artists narrating the gameplay, but all of this is false. I find this game to be a run of the mill colony simulator and the AI are just difficulty sliders.

I guess Cassandra Classic, Phoebe Chillax, & Randy Random doesnt exist then. also which trailer you speaking of, referring to the one narrated from the perspective of the speechless pawns who crash landed, because that's just fluff and wasn't promised.

phoebe spaces raids more evenly over long periods, while randy does not care and will stack multiple raids on top of each other. You aren't gonna notice the difference between them if you look at them playing one at a time. The ai aren't really difficulty sliders, but randy has way more potentialto muck you over by sending you more randomly powerful raids, while pheobe and cassandra tend to give you raids they expect you to handle. Randy also can give you more fortune events. Cassandra and pheobe tend to be more scripted and predictable while randy just does whatever, hence why people like playing with him, since it's the most engaging type of gamelay.

It is mostly true the storytellers are just a handful of sliders adjusting event frequency. It's not so much a difficulty slider though, each does provide a fairly different pacing and similar difficulty overall. These options are called "storytellers" so nothing was advertised falsely. The game as a whole is more the storyteller, the many events, the interactions between colonists, the effect of the world on your colony, these all adjust the story that happens even if very little is controlled by the individual "storyteller" choices.

I think OP might have believed the game actually featured a voice narrating the story?

It's the other way around OP the AI are not the story teller YOU ARE.
For real though, all the games of rimworld are you telling the story of your pawns ether their survival and flourish or their demise.

No, they don't exist. They don't talk. They don't narrate, they don't TELL a story. As in StoryTELLER, you know. They are just difficulty options with names. They should change the description of the game.

It's still a good colony sim game, just not a storytelling game.

That can be said of most games. But yet, most games don't advertise a storyteller in their descriptions. ANY game can be narrated in your head.

I think I'd be terrified if this game narrated my story verbally. Would be lovely to have my kids overhear "Doc has successfully harvested a human kidney before the kidney was sold to a passing black market ship and the pawn it was removed from was eaten by your colonists for dinner". I think I'd start feeling like I was playing TheSpiffingBrit's crimes against humanity organ farm run of the game.

In all seriousness though, the storytellers do actually change the game beyond simple difficulty. Randy's insane, he can grant you a gift from the heavens only to overrun you 20 minutes later with a rabid herd of man-hunting guinea pigs regardless how well you are doing or how horribly you are dying. Phoebe was my favorite for a while. She's generally the most relaxed imo but when she does hit you, she likes to hit you really really hard. Tons of time to prepare, but you pretty much HAVE to prepare for everything if you picked Phoebe, or she'll pick that one thing you can't deal with yet, murder your colony, and then send a man in black in to save you while she sulks for a while and you get basically no events, good or bad. Cassandra is the middle ground. very structured, very boring, well scaled. The pace is generally maintained and while she will challenge you she rarely tries to outright murder you. I don't think I've had a full colony loss under Cassandra yet. I've lost pawns sure, but not the entire colony like Phoebe and Randy tend to do to me.

Based on the official description of the storyteller on the store page, I think you took the word storyteller too literal in that context. It explains fairly well what said storyteller actually does. Narration is not among it.

I just broke 2000 hours played this last week. There is a story in every colony.

They're the storytellers, they make events happen that keep you from being able to just run a game indefinitely in perfect safety (see: dwarf fortress).

I don't know what video you saw, but if that's true, you'e not wrong.

There is no story teller. You're correct that they're difficulty sliders in every way. They don't interact in any way other than a planned schedule (or lack thereof, a la Randy) of throwing difficulty at you.

Just remember that while you're correct, the majority of people on here will argue because they'll do anything to defend the game.

This game is like a low end sports car. It's average to below average, as is, and not very fun to drive.

Think of a normal Mustang with a four cylinder. It's fine. But with mods, the mustang then becomes a Saleen Mustang which is incredible. Once you find the mods you want, despite the game being just an average Mustang, you're still driving a Saleen Mustang.

I am confused about what you expected - did you expect a lot of random dynamic events narrated by one of the storytellers? And the storytellers would have... different voices? Could you describe how you imagined the game would be?
