Ideology vs Royalty
Greetings, I got Biotech, but curious to pick up another DLC for a new run & thinking between one of these.
Mainly enjoy the colony aspect of Rimworld (and genetech), not sure which one of the DLC's to pick to add some extra fun in managing the people. on a new run.

Royalty has a lot of the best quests in the game, a huge chunk of the implants, high tech melee weapons, and a few other things aside from the royalty system and psi casting, both of which are really good. I do really like the Hotel quests, visitors staying with varying levels of expected quality of furnishing and demands for food and mood, desperate refugees to shelter that may join you, big construction projects, crashing shuttles, a lot of fun stuff. Extended list of combat implants are also really nice to have so some dude with a knife isn't much of a threat to your gunners anymore.

Calling in shuttles to carry you around like a taxi makes the world map way more explorable, contracted labourers if you need a bunch of stuff done, hired mercenarys to drop in to fight for you, I really do like a lot of it's systems.

Ideology requires mods to get much out of the ideology system as it's painfully barebones, about half the memes are nothing, heck one of the high impact memes is litterally nothing over not running it. Such a "good" system. Dryads are neat though, your own lil zerg swarm, and raidable camps are probably one of the best mechanics ever added. If Ideology didn't include raidable camps I'd never actually reccomend it ever pretty much.

Royalty is mainly to have certain pawns as title holders - or only one of them. And ideology would rather be about colony management, as You can tailor the preferences of Your pawns, for the better or for worse.

Like Royalty is probably the smallest DLC in what it adds, and You wouldn´t always make use of it, like it can also be tedious to outfit the people that way, or to have certain bed and throne room requirements.

But royalty adds certain new armor / weapons and equipment like drill arms.

It adds mech clusters and condition causers, which can be rather annoying, but add a new threat - and it adds psycasting.
The author of this thread has indicated that this post answers the original topic.

i'd go for royalty, the quests are fun, the psycasts are fun (unless you don't like the rank system then you probably need a psycast mod)

Ideology is more for rp reasons, if there are some modifiers you desperately need (I know I really wanted cannibal colonies, but stuff like underground colonies is nice too) it's fine to pick it up but it's not really top priority

Royalty has more straight game play elements like others said.

Thanks for the answers! Going for Royalty based on the responses as it seems what I look for, more quests & more world interaction + implants sounds good, I enjoy modifying my colonists.

If You never had a colonist with two drill arms - You don´t know how mining could actually look like.

Either decision would have been good in a way. Psy casting can be a game changer as well, and You can also get there via the anima tree if You´re not into the titles - if the pawn have the nature meditation, which all tribals have. But the titles come with other benefits, like calling aid in battle, or airstrikes, or a shuttle transport. You can shuttle in one direction and psy cast Yourself back. Most have a rather long cooldown, but most are also quite OP - and You could invest honor to get it done besides the cooldown - while honor is easy to come by if You only keep one or two psy casters with titles. Two are good, when both have the ability to "farskip", so if You send one one a caravan, the other could be used to be called in (with others) as reinforcement. If You do both with titles, both would demand a big bedroom and the big throne though, as farskip is a lvl 6 cast.

It really depends on your playstyle. I would describe the two in one sentence as Ideology being for roleplaying, and Royalty being for minmaxing and quests. I am heavily into role-playing colonies, so I consider Ideology the best DLC(*), and Royalty I almost did not get. If you want "extra fun in managing the people", then actually Ideology should be possibly the better one for you.

(*) Especially after I wrote a mod that adds many more precepts for ideoligions.
