Do larger maps still cause AI to be dumb?
I tend to find the standard size is a bit too small. The "large" ones come with a disclaimer it might break the AI.

I have a feeling those disclaimers might have been from an older version of the game, so, how bad is it?

As you extend the movement range the modified A* algorithm gets less precise in its optimizations. I think its a minor worry overall but it does happen where you see the path straight line in a weird way.

You can use the dev console to test it. You can summon extremely large raids and see what it does to performance (to simulate late game) You can also use character editor to give yourself like 15-20 colonists on top of that raid. Would be a rather fast and easy way to see what it will do to you late game without having to play for hours and hours first.

Iv only ever used the large maps from day 1.

And yah, the patching is less than perfect. But there's mods that can help with that.

And even if it's not perfect it's hardly game breaking. So they take a little longer and make a large detour to get somewhere. It's not a big deal.
