Standard or ambient horror for first anomality play?
Been playing alot of rimworld pre anomaly but when the dlc came out i never got back to the game and just now decide to start playing.

Pretty much going in blind for anomaly and was wondering what you guys would be the better option for first blind play for anomaly, i like the idea of ambient horrow but i kinda dont how its built in to the game by it seld but not the way when i have no dea what im going to face.

monolith questline is my recommendation. anomaly is more streamlined as a unique experience and less sandboxy compared to the other DLCs.

it doesnt mesh as well into the sandbox experience as the others do.
the individual anomalies wont change wether its questline or ambient but you'd get a more balanced occurance of anomalies (as they are divided into tiers which is directly connected to the monolith)

for an anomaly focused playthrough ambient lacks something - the reward of working through all its content.

Monolith for sure. There honestly isn't a reason to go no monolith imo.

I see, kinda interested to hear more about why you think so.

You don´t need to activate the monolith - same as the mechinator thingy. You can also adjust the settings - like no anomaly encounters when it´s not activated. Default is 8% - and You can adjust the frequency for when it´s activated as well - also mid game. You could set it to zero if it´s not activated, and low when it´s activated. It´s another option on the map which You otherwise don´t have.

The only thing is that You´d have a 3x3 or something building on the map which You don´t use if You don´t want to. So it could block certain designs - but that´s about it. Like the anima tree is also at a fixed position on the map - but You never need to use it. But You could. Imho there´s little point in not using it. Also it adds the questline and the ending if You want to go for it. Even more so when You want to play centered around anomaly.

If you have a solid grip on the rest of the game and want to get the full DLC experience, then absolutely standard.
Experience the full horrific glory of it to get the optimal experience of it, then if you find you like the vibe of the new events you can pick ambient for future runs.

I can go into more detail but gonna put it in spoilers. Read if you feel like, might damage some of the mystique though.

The monolith is just a building that sits around and does nothing. You research it for free, it upgrades to advanced research even. The only reason to turn it off would be if you want capturing entities to be mandatory as otherwise you can technically unlock everything in anomaly with just researching the monolith and no entity containment though more slowly. It doesn't impact the run much if at all itself, its just a box on the map that benefits you slightly and gives off a little bit of light. I truly, truly, do not understand the fixation on it.

There is a third option. Start with the monolith and use Dev mode to destroy it. It will then give you a quest you can activate at your leisure to spawn a new monolith. In the mean time you get ambient horror. If you want it more spicy accept the strange signal quest.

Just make sure its like the first thing you do upon landing because once the monolith activates you should leave it alone or bad things can happen bug wise.

It's very versatile indeed and me too resumed playing RW, going blind with Anomaly. I don't regret it, I'm still with standard settings (Monolith, 8%/30% chances) and I feel it's fine.

If you want to get the ending i would say you need the anomaly settings to standard
and if you want to take it slow, don't use the anomaly start because the monolith will automatically activate when it is possible

Monolith, I want some time to get ready

With all the info so far it seems like standard setting is the way to go as first time blind.
