there is a reason why killboxes are as common as they are. its usually a matter of positioning and base design.
in general for defenses you only think about 2 things:
-give the opponent as little advantage as possible (removing cover in the area that the enemy could use)
-having the most advantages you can get for your own pawns (cover for your pawns; potentially breaking line of sight so range of engagement is in your favor; boobytrapping the little cover you provide to the raiders)
If you want stuff thats better than vailla then most any weapon mod will do. Modders suck ass at balance so their stuff is always better than vanilla. They have gotton better than the days of ol, where a modded pistol would have 0.001 aim time, and cooldown deal 40 damage or more with triple the range of snipers. Or a dagger that does 15 attacks a second.
Thoes where dark days.

if it gets too easy, you can increase the difficulty, or use a weak material like wood. but i think embrasures are realistic. every fort had them. even medieval villages had a basic palisade.
