That's actually part of the reason a lot of people recommend not even ending the event. You can just keep dumping toxic wastepacks, corpses and tainted clothing inside. Even if you do plan to eventually kill the dreadmeld, nothing stops you from blowing up about 50 wastepacks right next to where the dreadmeld is and just ignoring the pit gate until it dies.
Actually a bigger problem is the contents of the pit gate count as wealth in terms of generating raid points. So if you plan to dump wastepacks and tainted clothing in it, you still should probably take out the dreadmeld otherwise you are kind of defeating much of the point of dumping unwanted stuff into the undercave. If you plan to just farm fleshbeasts, the fleshmass heart is a much more practical option. Despite what the wiki says, I can't really picture any actual reason to keep the pit gate from closing other than to mine, deconstruct and loot it first. Anything you build down there will still counts for wealth which defeats the point of any long term plans for it.
Of course, you can basically end up entombing yourself underground at that point, it might be too dangerous to leave the cave. its kinda a gimmick, but a neat one.
I usually play high wealth so that's not an issue, the wastepack dumping option sounds nice though, but I definitely don't want to add an independant raid timer on top of the list so it's a no-no
