Rimworld + ChatGPT
I was just thinking... it would be cool if there were a mod that added a ChatGPT interface into the game. That way, if you had a question about the game you could just ask the AI while playing. That would be awesome! What do you guys think?

What question would I want to ask that couldn't be answered faster and likely more accurately by reading the friendly manual wiki?

I kinda do that with my phone. When I read the title of this thread, I thought you were going to suggest chat gpt makes a mod for your every whim.

No its actually faster to just ask ChatGPT on my phone. I hit the "mic" icon and just ask verbally

Eh, sometimes AIs like ChatGPT are prone to making things up or giving otherwise misleading information. There's not much to vanilla Rimworld that can't be answered by a regular wiki or quick search. Plus They might have especially limited information when it comes to modpacks,

Thats true it has made things up on me before. But I've used it to look up Rimworld-related stuff like 20 times and each time the info it provided was accurate. Maybe a smaller AI could be developed especially for Rimworld? it may be easier to perfect a more specialized AI.
A non AI system would be much better, all you need it to do is fetch the correct information from the wiki and be able to understand what you are actually saying.

I don't trust AI's to give accurate information. While I am personally looking forward to seeing what AI technology brings to gaming, getting answers to questions isn't really what I would want their function to be.

Now, adding AI technology to the storyteller in Rimworld and having them be an actual narrator that puts together a narrative over time about what is going on, that might be cool. As long as I also had an option to turn it off.

Its disheartening that the younger generations didn't get taught how to look stuff up, because it was assumed they already knew how, and now we have this sort of garbage happening because of the infatuation with artificial 'intelligence': https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cd11gzejgz4o

LOL, that link was great @Kittenpox. I especially loved this part: "The search engine's AI-generated responses have also said geologists recommend humans eat one rock per day."

I had not heard that before and that is quite hilarious. Definitely reaffirms my pre-existing opinion on using AI to actually get information.

its not that I don't know how to look stuff up. I just thought it might be a cool idea.

Thank you, BMD. Looks promising. I'll give it a try.

chatGPT has the tendency to lie or make stuff up and i also hate ai so i could not think of something worse to add to rimworld

Chatgpt doesn't lie. It suffers from GIGO. It spouts what to it is shown as truth, but is really just the diarrhea pouring throughout the sewer we call the internet.

I've been studying and using AI for a couple years now. This is to answer your questions/objections.

1. You create a Custom GPT (in ChatGPT) or Project (in Claude).
2**. You save Wiki pages and guides you trust as pdf files (or you can copy/paste data/text from the wiki into the ai).
3. Upload those pdf files to the custom gpt or project.

You've just created an AI assistant that is an expert in Rimworld, complete with all the data, stats, numbers, etc...

Not only basic questions can be answered (perhaps someone isn't up to date on all the hidden mechanics in a specific DLC or two), but it can create a spreadsheet for you, graphs, interactive tables, etc. It can help you min/max in record time (with crops, crafting, trade, etc.). It can explain more complicated concepts in very simple terms (I used it to first understand compared crop efficiency in different soils in different biomes).

I also use it to create personal mods. It guides you through the entire process + provides code and corrections. I also used it to teach me how to effectively and efficiently use Development Mode in the game.

These AI chats are used incorrectly a lot of the time by most users. Many people use them like search engines. Big mistake. Use them instead to "work" for you by transforming them into assistants, agents, user created wiki systems, etc.

** or, if you are more advanced with ai, you create a site scraper that auto selects the info on RimWiki for a more comprehensive system. In fact, I may do just that and post some results. Up until now I've just been saving the wiki pages I'm interested / copying pasting data. But hell, why not just go full auto?

No, that's just a commentator system. That isn't what the op was asking for.
