He came inside a pawn that asked to join, but as soon as I saw a grey piece of flesh, I banished him.
When he got to the edge of the map, the thing popped out of him, and has just been sitting at the edge of my map for about a year now.
Hasn't moved or done anything at all.
Likewise, once you trigger them, they all burst out and the infestation is over. They don't stick around reinfesting people after that.
Highest rate of infection seems to come from medical tests, being fed a meal by an infected individual, and sleeping with an infected individual. I believe every social interaction has a small chance to spread it though, but I'm not sure I've ever heard of or seen someone being infected during a conversation with another colonist, or when playing poker together, or similar activities.
I think you can disable the event in the Scenario Editor before you start a game. Other than that, if you really want to remove them, simply enable Development Mode, go to your colonist's Health tab, and click on the Dev Tools there. The option to show hidden Hediffs will show you the Metalhorror infestation. You can then choose to Kill (think this causes it to emerge), Destroy (think this just removes it without the emergence), or Euthanize (causes it to emerge but you get Medical exp).
One thing to note, there is an incubation timer, so one of your colonists might be infected but you don't get the grey flesh event until later. This might be the cause of your chain infestations.
They are really good harvesting entities though. Reasonable containment requirement, and they give good research + bioferrite. Might be worthwhile to keep them around for a while.
