That doesn't work because in order to force your colonist to pick up something, you need to right click on the item, not on the stockpile.
Do you remember where your colonist was downed ? If so, and there nothing on the ground, is probably because the firearm was already bring back to a stockpile.
Sometime, players make unwanted stockpiles by mistake. To make sure your colonists don't have take the rifle on one that you missed, you can form a caravan in order to see if there your weapon.
However, if it happen outside of the "home" zone, the items your colonist was carrying are forbidden so they should be there.
If it isn't the case, i fear you just lost a rifle as it have been destroy in battle or by deterioring. But worried not, some will eventually come one way or a other.
Hope you will find it.
After some time, your colonists should move the weapons to the new stockpile allowing you to more easily see the rifle. Well, in theory anyway. Hopefully that helps.
If you didn't see where this was, go into Architect mode and right-click the "Unforbid" tool and unforbid all items, your haulers will find the weapon for you.
If you already know that you've hauled his weapon, what you could do instead is make a small stockpile zone, allow only ranged weapons - You can make the stockpile VERY specific by selecting only the exact weapon type, the allowed quality range of the item and even the item health. Set this stockpile priority to "critical".
Your haulers will move any items of those specifications from your other stockpiles it may lay hidden in and move it to the "critical" one since it holds highest priority.
If it isn't found, either your haulers are being lazy or the weapon has been taken and/or destroyed.
They ignore that and take it to the caravan.
Another option would be to drag the allow command over the map and then set a storage area for that item alone and set it to critical
If you want to do it on 1.4, you have to create a stockpile, give it high priority, only allow the item you want to find, and someone will haul it for you (unless it's forbidden, in which case, look where the pawn fainted)
