I am not sure what problems other people have had with it, but it had zero negative effects on my playthough.
(I'm familiar with area assignments, but pawns will ignore those in some circumstances, so I assume that's not what you're talking about.)
I would have guessed that the cube would also be an exception to this, and that they would ignore the restriction if they were attracted to it.
I'm just wondering if there's a way to do it vanilla or if he uses a mod for it, and what mod it is if he does. :)
It probably had nothing to do with area restrictions, that is just how many people were going to get hooked on it in his playthough.
I have the speech bubble mod that displays what pawns talk about, and they do, in fact, proselytise about the Cube. The more fascinated with the Cube a pawn is, the more likely they are to speak about the Cube, which then causes other pawns to become interested and creates a zone-ignoring action to go investigate the Cube.
So you either got lucky, or you made it impossible for other pawns to interact with the Cube by walling it in entirely and basically welding the Cube interested pawn into a locked room isolated away.
No no, I stopped anyone ELSE going into the room using area restriction.
The guys already obsessed, might as well make him research it.
That would trivialize it, so I expect that area restrictions have no effect whatsoever when it comes to the cube.
In my colony, it was not the researcher, or the occultist or the void fascinated pawn that became attached to it, it was just another random one.
The special mental breaks with the cube make area restrictions less useful. Yes your other pawns wont go near the cube (so they dont get auto fascinated), but obsessed pawns can and will ignore areas. Their scribbles, sculptures, and preaching all have a chance to interest more pawns. It sounds like you got REALLY lucky with that specific one.
My go to after losing a colony to cube + Randy is far more simple. I build a couple beds and table near the cube, drop a bunch of survival meals or pemmican (depending on my tech level), and then I wall the fascinated pawns in until its done researching (they WILL destroy a door thats disallowed, but dont seem to go after walls). When its done I open it up, arrest and sedate them, then destroy the cube.
The Cube is like a Tug-Of-War with sanity. Madness begins to take over. They desire the cube, they CRAVE the cube. The Cube is life. There is no life without the cube.
It starts off like no big deal, but slowly obsession creeps into your colonists to where they incur more mental breaks based on that obsession, and lose lots of work productivity due to the strong desire to play with the cube.
In early game its not a big deal, but when you have 10 colonists fighting over the thing it causes workflow to break down to a point it affects other colonists.
When obsession is too high the colonists will die from withdrawal meaning if they are downed and unable to walk due to injury, they will die from obsession, and you cannot send them on a caravan that is too far away due to the same reason.
Before you know what happened, all of your colonists have gone crazy because of one thing.
The Cube.
and if all of your colonists are obsessed... they will refuse to destroy the cube.
With no way to destroy the cube, the colony will descend into total anarchy as they worship their golden square treasure.
I guess your could, but it did not affect my colony in any meaningful way, so it seems like an overreaction. I put the cube in the center of my colony and surrounded it with the little sculptures they made of it.
It isn't like it hurts anything for them to be in love with the cube, right?
Mine never got anywhere near that extreme. I had it for about 20 days I think.
