you can also try and play within your cpu's capability. fewer pawns, fewer animals, smaller maps, less stuff laying around in storage and things like that. if you are playing with mods already, some are heavier than others. something that adds a new type of clothing is obviously less of an impact than something that is going to mess with pathfinding, like the hauling or locks mods.
I suppose another thing to keep in mind is Tynan never really counted on massive colonies early on when he was designing the game, just based on how much of a hassle it can be to manage once you get bigger than 15-20 colonists.
