Game freezes on exit
Hi,

My game keeps freezing on exit. It's not a huge deal and I haven't had and mishaps with savegames or update steam data, but just bugs me. I always have to force close the game on windows.
I have all 3 DLCs and about 25/30 mods.
Any thoughts?

For what it's worth, I had the same issue couple of weeks ago.

No dlc, quite a few mod but nothing too extravagant.

Game was saving properly but just crashed on exit.
I've tried the usual of trying to see what mods could cause this but at the end of the day, I've quickly gave up and put this on mods future proofing their stuff for the next dlc and causing funky stuff. If I had to guess a likely culprit I would say some "vanilla expanded" stuff that keep doing small update since dlc was announced.

Also, it only crashed when I tried to save and straight to OS whereas if I save to menu screen then quit the game it works fine.
I suggest you try that before going further to avoid unecessary hassle.

I had the same issue for couple months now. My game is saved as well, but Steam just can't close the game somehow.
Check that it isn't spamming the error log, you will know if it is when you look at the logs.

It is one or more mods that spam your error log, usually it's mods biting eachother, i had the same thing, for me it was sounds using the same channel at the same time.
I moved one of the mods that has added sound effects higher in the modlist then the vanilla expanded mods (which also have added sounds) and the issue went away most of the time :)

It's just a fact that mods will do this at times.
When the game hangs again, Alt-Tab out and click the Stop button in steam, it will stop the game running.

P.S. check the size of the logfile , if not checked it can take a large chunk of your SSD memory, it can easily run into the gigabytes, you can safely delete the player.log .

The sound issue mentioned above is a unity error caused by a sound effect (or multiple) playing as you try to close the game. The more mods with sound effects you have the more likely it is to trigger. It should be pretty rare though, it requires very specific timing. IIRC The game shuts down in stages which take like milliseconds each, and if a sound effect sneaks into one of the gaps after the main threads have closed but the "outer layer" of the application is still up, it hangs and doesn't know what to do. One part of the application sends a stop command but the part of the application that would receive that command and confirm it has already closed, as has the controller that limits the log to a certain number of lines, and so it gets stuck in a loop printing to the log until you run out of drive space.

This is not the only type of error that would cause the game to freeze on shut down, but it's a relatively well known one.

Hello, I do have same issue. I can play the game fine for about 10 minutes then it starts to stutter. At that point i can not save the game anymore too. Then after a while game freezes completly. I play with custom Map size 400:400. I do have few Starwars Mods but nothing extravagant too hehe.
400x400 is about 4x the default size, and comes with a comparable amount of extra critters and plants and such putting a much larger strain on the system.

aha i thought 250 is default.
It is still substantially more than the default, with 160k tiles (while 250x250 is 62.5k).

Been an issue for years. So what? If it freezes on exit, oh well, I was done playing anyway. Just manually shut it down via control panel.
