yes, herbivores eat any plant food in any form, and carnivores eat any meat
MadArtillery Mar 5, 2024 @ 8:08am
Yup, if they are a herbivore or omnivore anyway, they'll also eat meals which are higher nutrition efficiency.

You can also sow hay and hunt animals and make kibble which all animals can eat.

Alternatively you can use human mean for this if you don't mind the mood and social penalties for butchering humans

Carnivores will even nom corpses, just make a smallish room, refridgerated if needed, set it as storage for corpses and make sure that you worgs and cats are allowed in there by zoning and that you colonists don´t need to go there (so they don´t get distressed by the sight).

Benefit of this method is that you technically haven´t butchered anyone!

For the most part carnivores will also just go hunt their own food which is convient. Except when it's foxes, they suck too much in combat and always get themselves hurt.

When I look at the stats of my colonists using Character editor, all my colonists HATE all my meat eating pets with a passion because they eat human meat occasionally.

Is there any scenario where that could have any effect in the game whatsoever? If not, then why is it tracked? It seems pointless to keep track of colonist's opinion of animals, unless I am missing something.

That's a thing that gets tracked? Is it used for bonding or something maybe? Weird.
VitaKaninen Mar 5, 2024 @ 10:42am
In my current Ideology bonding is disabled, but in other playthroughs I seem to remember having roughly the same number of bonded herbivores as I did meat eaters, so I don't think it had any effect.

I only notice it when I look at the social tab and there is a list of 60 animals that every colonist hates.

So opinion is not tracked or stored directly as a value anywhere, it's dynamic and based on events that have happened and those events are what are stored. The events are known as "tales" and are also used for things like generating random descriptions of art. Animals can generate tales and be subject to various art related stories, but colonists do not have opinions of animals and do not consider animal related tales. If you somehow got character editor showing you animal tales and attached opinion values, which I don't remember seeing personally, it's just the mod interpreting relatively useless data and you can ignore it. You might see a piece of art created at some point about Husky 42 eating human meat surrounded by penguins as a clown watches from the sky though.
so ive seen it here, and in other threads. People have said that feeding animals meals is more "efficient". now what does that mean? ive done the thing of feeding simple veggie meals to the livestock for cooking training, but not really understanding why.

Cooking meals increases the nutritional value of the item.

normally 10 potatoes yields 0.5 nutrition. Turn it into a simple meal and the simple meal has 0.9 nutrition. Thus for big hungry animals like cows, if you feed them simple meals, it's more nutritionally efficient than if you had them eat raw potoatoes for example.

(this doesn't work with hay since hay cannot be cooked, aside from kibble, which has its own problems in acquiring meat)

ah good i can wrap my head around that. then if i'm feeling real efficient i'll remember to take insect meat and hay for kibble. just having both of those things at the same time

As a bonus, if you milk a cow and turn the milk into meals, cows become self sufficient. They produce enough milk to feed themselves (when that milk cooked into a simple meal) and produce a few extra units of milk, meaning the more cows you own, technically the more infinite food you own.
