This game makes no sense.
Mother starts starving to death while breast feeding because it takes so long and she hasn't had lunch yet despite having breakfast. I'm sure it's a common problem, mothers IRL starving to death while breast feeding and unable to receive food by someone else.
Every event is based on what you research. Research mortar... suddenly gifted with 3 tech alien node spawns and a crashed bio ship. Is it karma? Is it God saying you're ready for this? Would the biome destroying ship have landed if I didn't research mortar? Do the caravan missions just pop up for if you make a mistake in production? You can't go do them for fun lest ye lose a person due to a cat scratch bleed out?

All this tech tree and all these factions, yet the game always throws at me simulated events that target whichever bulk resources and/or trained skills I have in the game. Then the little things start going wrong like a mother can't live because she's breast feeding.

Well you are 100% lying or just seriously misunderstanding whats happening in game because there is no way what you claim to have happened happened.

It's just not at all how the game and the starving mechanic works.

You are, the EULA explicitly grants that permission.

Posting my photos on the actual wall over here. Can you see them? Cool vacation right?

(As an actual old lady I can make this joke.)

we had three biome destroying ship landings before we got a mortar in our mp game.
we also had 20 attackers with sticks and stones we wellcomed with our selfcrafted miniguns...

and when you get en event and reload to a point before the event has triggered, you will notice, that another event will trigger at nearly the same time. at least, most of the time ^^

skill issue. git gud.
lol i dont think i've had anyone die from outright neglect in this game yet. i've had livestock like ducks die from starvation, from forgetting to let them out to eat. There's something grapes of wrath of 'your mom' dying while breastfeeding her child tho

Wasn't there a bug way back when Biotech was new that a nursing mother's hunger rate multiplier was way off? I may be misremembering, but if it was, I'm curious if the OP is using an older version for some reason.
Astasia Mar 5, 2024 @ 4:48pm
If a pawn is lactating and not at full milk their hunger multiplier is increased fairly significantly, so that hitting 0 food is fairly common for them, especially if they are also a xenotype with increased hunger rates and/or a Gourmand. What the OP described is not at all abnormal, starting the breastfeeding process while already getting hungry can cause hunger to hit 0 during the process, pawns do not interrupt jobs to go eat (some jobs do have natural breaks though).

It takes multiple days for a colonist to starve to death and you will be getting a lot of warnings on your UI when they start becomming truly malnourished, even with the breastfeeding multplier on hunger for the colonist to die is not easy to do.
Breastfeeding takes a bit, but it would actually be somewhat hard to make the mother die even intentionally, let alone by accident.

Events and raids are not based on your research. Mostly depends on your colony wealth and number of colonists. This is not a matter of opinion. There is no such thing as "I have my facts and you have yours" as you seem to be arguing.

Yeah, the mothers breastfeeding in Rimworld do regularly starve while breastfeeding their baby. It's because of the exponentially increased hunger rate that occurs. I've never had any issues of them actually dying because of it, just a nuisance to deal with.

They always eat directly after breastfeeding, so it's never been an actual issue for me that's caused a mental break or death.

It's working as intended.

1) Mothers do not die while breastfeeding unless you are starving them or they have other issues (like gutworms or gourmand together)

2) Research has nothing to do with random events like raids or cargo pods

3) You can't craft mortar parts because you didn't turn it on in the world settings.

You can mod the game yeah, but you don't even need a mod to change many of the problems you seem to be facing, as they are almost entirely adaptable in the settings or can be turned off entirely. Ontop of this, careful planning, learning from mistakes and finally "drama". Negative elements that bring a story together, no interesting story is entirely positive or negative, and you have the tools to make a weave of both.

ofcourse hunger has to be an abstraction, when a year is condensed down to 60 days, and instead of every pawn having to consume a realistic amount of food worth a year wouldn't work, and instead scales it to 1-2 meals a day based on metabolism. as soon as the hunger bar hits 0 because the mom didnt eat for whatever reason would starvation kick in, 0% hunger isnt "i feel hungry", it's "i've not eaten for well over a day" comparetively.

and listen buddy, researching mortars doesnt "allow" new incidents to happen, they are not linked, ALL threats in this game are scaled off of a little mechanic known as colony wealth
you have lots of stuff? then surely you'll be able to deal with X. THAT is the games logic

ill give you the mortar parts one, it's a change made in late beta stages to encourage trade with factions and not just always turtling up forever, but it is changeable in the game settings and you can make them craftable :P

at the end of the day, it's what the game is, if you're unhappy about it, play a diffrent game. love it or hate it, not much will change it, unless you wana hunt thru the mod workshop that expands the game horizon inconceivably far. stop wining, learn how the game works if you think you'd enjoy it. we all did.

Reinforced barrels cannot be crafted in vanilla, only bought, no matter your mortar settings. You have the option of never needing to replace the mortar's reinforced barrel at the cost of mortar accuracy or have the option to have mortars need replacement after 20 shots for increased accuracy.

Too reiterate: You can never make reinforced barrels in vanilla. Only buy them.

Geez, I'd hate to see the accuracy of the mortar with the permanent barrel; I just used a 'regular' mortar on a defoliator ship and it took 23 shots to destroy the ship...
