(Also, I wouldn't recommend ALL of the VE mods. One, that's a lot of mods, many of which are pure fluff and two, they don't always play nice with each other. The "Vanilla Expended" tag doesn't automatically mean they will. Doesn't seem to have much meaning these days. Used to, I think.... )
If you absolutely have to, install Scenario Amender (something like that) and edit your scenario to unlock the hi-tech research bench. You can do all your research in that bench, but you may be forced to add research for power or batteries as well, since you need power for the bench to work.
That's a workaround anyway, it's not a fix. If you can, list all the mods that aren't VE.
Hm. Sounds like it could be some mod weirdness, then. With how long the list of Vanilla Expanded mods is I can't tell you what it would be that's doing it. I'm also not familiar with Research Pal, so it could be something with that. Try pulling out mods one by one and reloading the game until you get your research tables back to figure out which one's doing it, I guess.
Also, did you read the full description of each mod you installed, or did you just install everything "Vanilla Expended" without question?
I have the machine to handle mods, I don't see why is that a big issue, Vanilla expanded are compatible with most mods
Are you using either of those mods? Did you make sure that you had not disabled it with them?
I feel that it must be mod-related in some way, though.
Okay, if you have VFE: Tribals, I think there's a way to see what tech level you're at. If you're at "animal" tech level and having to research the stuff in the "basic" tab, then you haven't reached high enough tech level to even build a research spot yet. I think the research bench is in "basic furniture", so if that's not researched yet, you need to get it. VFE Tribals introduces tribal gatherings to advance tech at the most basic tech level ( The gatherings award a number of research points based on the quality of the gathering, divided among available research projects ). If you have all the basic tech tab researched but don't have basic furniture researched yet, look for a "research spot" in your build menus.
What...machine to handle mods? Huh? And....no, not really. Like I said, these days the "Vanilla expanded" title doesn't mean a lot. There are those who try to curate what gets labeled as such, but they can't really force someone to change the name of their mod if they just slap "Vanilla Expanded" onto the name. There's no guarantee on quality or compatibility, even with other VE mods. And it's also a bad idea just to slap a ♥♥♥♥ ton of mods in without fully reading up on what each one does. I guarantee there are more than a few in that list that you'll probably never touch the features on.
That's not how it works. Playing modded is like making a sandwich, the mods are the toppings. Enabling the entire VE collection at this point is like dumping the entire contents of your refrigerator onto a piece of bread. Just because the bread is a rock hard baguette and can survive the ordeal, doesn't mean the sandwich is going to be edible.
Many of the VE mods have content that directly contrasts with each other to result in a mostly broken, thematically and sometimes mechanically, experience. Your "issue" is almost certainly related to VFE Tribals, which is a mod you should probably only enable if you want to fundamentally change your research and progression in the way it describes.
To be fair, mod lists that big aren't that uncommon, just can't slap that many onto the game untested all at once. Usually mod lists that long come from playing the game for years and gradually adding mods as you go.
I had a research spot from the start but I did not notice it. I need to progress to get the table.
