Would You Like Rimworld 2 in 3D ?
Saw the Prison Architect 3D Variant.
Think this might be an Option for Rimworld ? ^^

I'll pass. 2d is fine.

In the way PA is doing it, no. It's not worth the cost in development time or modding potential lost. Almost anyone can slap together a basic 2D asset and find a way to get it into the game through a mod, very few people can make or alter a 3D asset. Making the 3D "simple" doesn't really help.

If Microsoft bought Ludeon and put AAA funding behind a full 3D next gen RimWorld 2 where everything looked believable and you could get fully immersed in the world and setting with like a first person control option for a pawn, then sure, that would be sweet, as long as the gameplay didn't suffer for it.

But if we want modding, the performance would almost certainly be lost.

Not really, would make modders making custom artwork would be so much harder which would be a shame. I like 2D games and graphics a lot. Wouldn't mind z levels as that can be done in 2D but a transition to 3D would probably go as well as it did for AI war 2. Complete waste of time.

You actually looked at what PA2 is doing and said "I want some of that"?

Neither.
I am Fairly Neutral on the Issue.
Hence why I was Interested to Hear what others think about it.

As for myself.

On one Hand I do think that having the Ability of Building Multistage Buildings.
Including Fort Walls that can be Patrolled by Colonists and from which Colonists can Fire Down without the Enemy being able to reach them in Melee would be very Cool.
After all it would add a New Dimension to the Game and allow far Cooler Bases.

But I also worry that it would massively Complicate Pathfinding and Pawn Behavior.
Not to mention it would likely be Annoying with Walls Obscuring the View on stuff and needing to somehow tell the Game what level of the Building You want to Watch into etc.

I was actually less worried about Modding to be Honest.
After all Games like Skyrim are well known for Modding too. And these require 3D Assets as well.

You'd be surprised. If people want to mod a 3D game badly enough, they'll learn 3D modeling just to achieve that. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of 3D modelers derive their experience from Skyrim or Fallout modding.

No thanks, I hope that RimWorld never gets bought by anyone and remains in Ludeon's ownership, or better yet, goes in limbo like Cortex Command where its actively developed by the community.

If it were to be bought, then I think TinyBuild would be a good candidate. The old Paradox would too, but oh how the mighty had fallen.

Well. Frankly thats no Different for Rimworld right now.
Vast Majority of Mods are Quite Terrible.

But thats how the World works.
Only a Small part of Mods will have a High Quality. And usually only Games where You got Tons of Terrible Mods will start also having a few very High Quality ones :)

There are rimworld clones that do it, but they all seem to be a lot more limited in scope. Going Medieval has the up/down axis and you can build multiple story buildings, cellars, etc. But it's strictly medieval tech levels, and the AI has had path finding issues on and off since the EA started.

I haven't played it in a while, but when i played last a few archers on elevated platforms was all you needed to defeat raids of almost any size. Just build a few disposable things out in the open in range of the platform and watch the raiders break stuff you didn't care about while death rained down from above.
