1. is the highest priority job of the researcher researching? It's a very long term job so has to be handled with the job priorities.
2. Do you have a research bench?
3. Does the technology of the research bench match the required tech level of the research? High tech/analyzer may be required.
4. Do you have a research locked in as a selection properly?
5. Are people allowed in the area with the bench?
Go into the jobs, and assign the pawn with the highest intelligence to research, disable the other jobs or make sure research is number with a higher priority that the other jobs. You only need 1 researcher early game.
The job givers assigns task to pawns from left to right listed on the job bored. Example: if crafting and research are both 2, the game will always assign crafting to an eligible pawn since the
Crafting Job comes before Researching. This is probably why you keep seeing your researcher running off to do something else.
If you didn’t know you can change the check marks on jobs to numbers, the option looks like tetris blocks with numbers on them found on the right side of the job menu. Assign the research job to level 2. Level 3 jobs are things that they can do if they don’t have a research assignment or are something that you want them to react to if it were a life or death situation.
Additional Tips:
I give the following jobs highest priority (1):
1. Firefighting
2. Patient
3. Resting
4. Rescue
5. Urgent Hauling (may require a mod)
This was it insures the pawns will keep themselves alive, not working while the base burns down, and not just standing around.
Level 2 Jobs go to the main job that i want the pawn to do.
Level 3 jobs are usually always cleaning/hauling or any other job where this pawn is going to back up another pawn. (Harvesting, Mining, Planting).
These tips should apply to a modded game unless a mod fundamentally changed the
Job system. If you are using “ Fluffy’s colony manger”, the job menu still drives what jobs can be given a job.
Once you get the job menu setup you should never need to force a pawn unless it’s an emergency.
