keeping my megasloth outside
I have the pop-up notification that there's a large, filthy animal messing up my indoor areas. Is there a way to keep a tame megasloth outdoors? They don't pen, so that didn't work. Is there a way to assign them an area like I can do with my colonists?

Can you be a little more specific? I know how to create an "Area," but I can't seem to figure out how to assign the megasloth to it.

Either on the animal itself you can assign it to the zone or clicking the animals tab.

go to zone and make a new zone. then go the animal and set it to only be in that zone

Maybe I'm a little thick, but I'm not following this. The best I've been able to do is assign Megasloth 1 to a sleeping spot in my pasture. It now sleeps there every night, but during the day it roams wherever it wants to go, including indoors.

I'm not sure, but I think you might be calling it a "Zone," when the game calls it an "Area."

A "Zone" is a region of the map designated for a specific task. When I click "Architect," then "Zone," I'm able to designate growing zones, fishing zones, stockpile zones, dump zones, and roof zones. I can also resize my "Home Area," and designate "Snow Removal Areas."

An "Area" is just a part of the map designate to be a named location. It's not designated for a specific purpose, and it acts a lot like a "Burrow" in Dwarf Fortress. You can assign colonists to it and they will pretty much stay there, and won't (or mostly won't) accept tasks outside their assigned "Area."

I have created an Area (named "Area 2"), that encompasses my fenced-in pasture, and a few tiles on each side of it. I can't see any place on the Megasloth's menu, or in the Animals tab, where I can assign the Megasloth to it. On the Animals tab, there's a button that says "manage areas." When I click that, it lets me re-name, invert, delete, and create "Areas." I can't do anything else with that panel.

When I open the Animals tab and click on Megasloth 1, it brings up her panel. The tabs available are "Log," "Social," "Training," "Needs," and "Health." I have big buttons in my main view that say "Slaughter," "Release to Wild," and "Release to Repopulate" (I think that one might be from the Vanilla Animals Expanded mod). On none of these tabs do I see anything that looks like a way to assign the animal to a sleeping spot, a pen, or an area.

For Science, I also looked at the controls for Stallion 1. He also has nothing that looks like a way to assign him to a specific zone, area, or pasture.

When I select a colonist and right-click on Megasloth 1, my only option is to train it. When I likewise right-click on Stallion 1, there is an option to "rope" him, but that option is greyed-out, because he is already "in best pen."

I don't think so, but is it possible one of the Vanilla Expanded mods has removed some animal controls that would allow me to do what I'm trying to do? I'm going to try this again with no mods to check that. That will for sure break my game, but it should also answer the question of whether a mod is to blame.

On the Animals tab, on the line for Megasloth 1, all the way to the right is the column labeled "Allowed Area." Change that from "Unrestricted" to "Area 2" (or whatever area you want the animal to stay in).

Thanks everybody for helping me figure this out.
