RimWorld

RimWorld

Smallest dimensions for a good bedroom?
Speaking in terms of Terraria, there's a certain limit to what NPCs will consider "livable". Is there a minimum area for Rimworld that the pawns will accept as livable and won't complain about having an inadequate living space?

I prefer to get started and once I have a decent grasp on the current colony, I move my base of operations to where I want my main colony to be by starting with the bedrooms and in this current map, I don't have the biggest space to work with at the moment but I'd like to get most of the bedrooms started.

I consider "smallest" to be a 3x3, but never had issues with a 3x5. 3x3 gives space for a dresser, bed and lamp.

I prefer 3*5 because you can put the door on one side of 3 wide wall, then still have space for a doublebed, end tables or dresser/shelf and lamp.

5x4 gives enough space for amenities to get it to a positive moodlet bonus too!

I was doing 7X9 on my old map and just stuffing artwork in anyone's room who was complaining. I'll try out 5X4 since I like having some amenities to keep them happy.

Thanks.

I'm going 5x5 and had haven't any complaints. I can put a bed and end table in there without it feeling too cluttered.

I'm also really anal so I like the dimensions to be even, be it 3x3 or 4x4 or 5x5

I used to use 5x5 before Royalty. Now I use 6x5 which allows you to meet the minimum requirement for a noble (30 tile).

Which threw me when I started playing the DLC.
They asked for a thrown room and proceeded to have a tantrum when 5X5 didn't cut it. :P
One of the reasons I rarely use the DLC.

I've been doing 5x4 and 4x5 for a few months now as the "new norm" for bed size. It seems to be the best size. I used to do 5x5 but smaller rooms means a smaller base and a smaller area that is easier to defend.

7x7 is the point of "diminished returns" where there's nothing to be gained from a larger bedroom size. I mean you can, but a 13x13 sized bedroom is excessive...

Also, do not underestimate irregularly shaped rooms. Making nooks in a room for beds, lamps, workbenches or electrical switches can allow you to meet room size requirements with some creative designing.

I use this mod:

My rooms are 3x5, 5x5 for couples or for favorite jealous/greedy pawns.

Just to be clear, when people say 5X4 or 5X5, you're talking about the actual tile dimensions inside the room, correct? I usually count walls when I talk about dimensions since it's technically part of the room. So when I said above that my bedrooms were usually 7X9 on the old map, it was actually 6X8 of actual space.

Yeah, the inside of the room, not counting the walls, is 5x5, at least for me.

I actually had a colony where I was trying to run the base at minimal cost/resources so did some fair testing on it; cheapest/smallest room I could make to get 'Slightly Impressive' (in order to appease Greedy pawns was;

3x4 internal area + Good Wooden Bed
or
4x4 internal area + Good Wooden Double Bed

Concrete Floor
Marble Walls
Excellent Small Marble Statue
Wooden Door
Torch
Passive Cooler

You can get away with 2x3 or 3x3 (Single Bed/Double Bed respectively) for non Greedy Pawns by omitting the statue, should give 'Dull' which'll neither offer + or - , except for Ascetics who'll get +4 (I think +4 don't quote me!)

2x3 and 3x3 however may suffer from 'Slept in cold' due to Passive Cooler so either a vent into a temperature regulated area; however that uses space/cost so just upgrading to 3x4 or 4x4 is probably worth it.

5x5 is my standard room size, but will probably change that in the near future. I want to find my ideal odd x even dimension, to make uniform rooms for everyone but still being able to place either a single bed or a double bed, as well as the entry door, in each room equidistant to the walls. Lack of symmetry is my OCD. :P

I had to go with a variety of 6X5 and 6X6 to make my rooms congruent with one another. It took me a while to figure out the best way to situation them as I was trying to make them all the same size, but given the space I had, that wasn't possible so now they are mirrored.

Just have to get the rec room, dining room, and cooking/freezer laid out and the rest will fall in place.

I never really got why people make such huge rooms for their pawns. I almost exclusively never go above 3x4 (single), 4x5 (double), or 5x6 (new royalty) ... all internal sizes. Just put in carpet and a small statue and every room is basically mediocre - slightly impressive with no debuffs to mood.

Plus with smaller, rectangular rooms it's easier to make aesthetically pleasing apartment blocks with shared heating/cooling.
