building in mountains vs outside
looks like building outside is the way to go. Any point in building in mining out a building spot?

Well, I figured I would try a mountain base, all my three guys died with a collapsed roof, lol.

Overhead mountains are immune to drop pods and are the best form of insulation. In exchange they can spawn infestations and are kind of a pain to dig out.

Outdoors has access to sunlight, wind, and rivers for power generation as well as soil for growing crops and feeding domesticated ruminants.

I prefer to build outdoor bases but both are good. I feel like most players prefer mountain bases as they're a bit more secure, as drop pod raids seem to wreck a lot of players.

i disable infestations and build into the mountains. i pretty much do a "leave me be and ill leve you be" playstyle, and the bugs aren't really good at keeping their end of the deal.

building in mountains is better on 200x200, on 250x250 there is space to build a unified outside structure and have space for defending from threats, on 300x300 you can try building small village with tiny separate houses for everyone, on 400x400 you can build a realistic village with proper individual houses with rooms for everyone (if you are not planning on hunderds of colonists). Generally on smaller maps mountain might be easier and on bigger maps outside might be easier

there are a couple base design videos on YT that perfectly list the pros and cons of certain base types (mountain, superstructure, city).

mountains are great against dropraids, easy to manage temperaturewise but suffer from infestation events instead of dropraid.

superstructure have the issue with dropraids but are still better than cities when it comes to temperatures

city types have less issues with dropraids than superstructures because due to the spacing the dmg dropraids can cause is relativly low. they are horrible for temperaturemanagement though (in vanilla).

Mountains prevent grenades, fire weapons, and rocket launchers from spawning INSIDE my base. I can handle the bugs.

Also mountains prevent mortars from landing in the area.
