do you keep space between shelves?
It would appear that the pawns can just walk over shelves and not have to go around them, so I guess there is nothing to stop me filling a room entirely with shelves? But I can't bring myself to do it. I have to lay them out in aisles like a supermarket even though this lovely layout is completely ignored!

You know, I used to! 😂 But for some reason, ever since the update that gave more space per shelf, I actually started acting like there was less space, and piled them all together!! I don't know why. I guess I got more greedy. 🤣

Yes, to place stuff that can't be placed on shelves.

Walking over shelves has a movement speed penalty. It's better to leave space between them.

Yeah but a lot of the times, they still move over them when it's faster and it's hard to know how much space is enough space when planning.

Edit Actually, with mass stockpiles, I'm normally expecting the trade beacon to empty them, so the people can simply store up front to begin with.

i do the same. them walking over or through furniture bugs me, so i try and lay stuff out so they dont have to. they obviously still do, but thats their choice, not mine.

I think squishing them together isn't really bad. Even when I have a middle walkway my colonists would simply walk over shelves normally so their pathing doesn't think its that big of a deal.

The only thing shelves seem to get in the way of, are blocks behind the shelf that you want to mine. Otherwise, i don't see why sandwiching them would hurt. (Aside from the ol ocd brain)

I tend to organize my shelves for efficient access and mobility through the room. They are setup so that it's never faster to climb over a shelf to reach another and colonists can zip in and out of storage at full speed. The speed penalties of climbing over objects becomes much more obvious at higher move speeds, watching a pawn with like 15-20 c/s move speed slow to a crawl to climb over a piece of furniture is pretty brutal to me and triggers me hard. Actual efficiency of a smaller but more tightly packed storage room might be comparable, but I just can't do it.

I do the supermarket aisle thing too. Usually broken up into something like wall-shelf-aisle-two shelves back to back-aisle-shelf-wall, adding more aisles and back to back shelves as needed. At least one break in the aisle all the way across, more as needed. Usually every 3-5 shelf units. I rarely get pawns climbing over more than one space of shelf, and often they don't even do that. All shelf spaces are adjacent to at least one empty space. It probably isn't the most mechanically efficient setup, but it's efficient enough and looks nice. Aside from sections like body dumps, the whole thing tends to have a positive beauty score once the floor's in, which is nice.

In the early game where I don't care and I just need stuff and space NOW I squish all the shelves together

When I get a more proper base set up I have my shelves a bit more spread out in rooms like armories

It's extremely satisfying for one's OCD to have neat rows of shelves in the supermarket setup with sections dedicated to certain item categories. You can instantly see at a glance how much you have off each item.
