And I already have a mod that reduces the number of pawns killed in raids. Without the mod you notice the kill rate is pretty high. With the mod it's reduced. You can still end up killing them, but it produces more downed pawns that vanilla.
Step 2: Convoy to other nearby towns and trade those dusters for neuroshock artifacts
Step 3: Pause the next time a raid comes by to "browse" recruits.
Step 4: Zap your desired new pawn in the face!
Step 5: Indoctrinate that pawn until they cant take it anymore and give into your insane demands to join your communist paradise.
Ten pawns is about the right number necessary to comfortably take care of just about all your basic needs, so you're not wrong there. :)
Recruiting can take longer. (It seems as if it takes longer to recruit than it used to, long ago.)
Capturing pawns is possible, especially if you focus on it as much as you can in the early game before you start encountering extremely dangerous enemies with armor/helmets. Good ol' clubs are a good choice all around. :) (Jade/Uranium club) Once you start getting more damaging weapons, traps, and defenses, the risk of blowing off limbs, permanently serious injuries, headshots with brain damage, etc, starts to add up, making some Prisoner recruits more of a liability.
Sadly, that's your fault. If you're up to 10 Pawns and only now know you only had one with decent Construction skill, you should have been training some other all along. If you have everyone else at 2 or less... Well, the only excuse for that is if you're a brand-new player. If so, that's fine - Now you know to not let that happen again. :)
vanilla events expanded also throws a lot of unaffiliated pawns at ya which you can tend and they might stay. if they dont you can still "ask kindly" for them to stay
an android would be pretty much the same except for a lil bit of downtime but less effort if we included modded options
In vanilla I had the same struggle, after a few hundred hours I modded my game and now I miss that challenge. Even tho I do not have any mods with intentional purpose of making it easier to recruit pawns and such, it still happens way too fast.
It really helped with that issue and was kind of fun but I felt like it was way too easy to do. Still, may be the type of thing you are looking for.
Stockpiling shock lances is a very good thing to do, it is especially useful when raiders have relationships with your colonists as you can safely incapacitate them so you don't give those colonists mood debuffs by killing their aunties, sons in law ect.
