You still more a lot more than 0, especially considering OP is talking about "overwhelming manhunter packs".

If you can't conceavably deal with their numbers - hide inside your base, do not let them see you open the door or they will barge in.
Manhunter packs are infected with scaria disease, and they do not eat - so if you can afford sitting inside, you can starve them out.

They're not a threat if you can stay "inside" and out of sight for a few days. Though, they're usually a good source of resources if you can take them out as they usually come in large numbers.
A good idea is to barricade doors by building a single block of wall in front of them, so no one leaves even if there's a mental break or something.
