I've had really good luck lately with this burn box, but if they're busting through your walls it won't help much.

Another thing i noticed is that you can't just "meet them in the field" and kite them with jump packs etc, since raiders now tend to mostly ignore your soldiers shootiung at them and just run straight to your base center. Don't know if it was always like this, haven't played for a while before i started up biotech
As for drop pod raids, I recommend having some 3x3 corridors in your colony so you can group up your colonists and hunt down the raiders one by one. Those rockets shouldn't be an issue if you just kill them before they can use it.
Fire is an issue early game before you can make fireproof buildings, by time a 40 person outlander raid happens you should be laughing at any fire based attacker.
also i save all the rocket lanuchers i get and then i can hit a big mob with a few rockets at the start of the fight if needed
And lategame charge rifles and lances make short work of them - but then the killbox doesn´t matter as they also like to drop pod all over the place, that´s why i usually don´t bother with building one - but i agree that the numbers are sometimes ridiculous, that´s why i set the threat scale to 60% nowadays, which means they would "only" call like 100 tribals in some quest missions, or "only" 30 elephants - with Randy and 500k+ wealth.
Drop pods can be easy with the 3x corridor and the common 13x13 buildings - but that looks boring imho. That way You could place a turret at any crossing (which usually get disabled by a solar flare before a bigger raid), and always have a straight and clear line of sight for shooting with providing little cover for them and their short range.
I usually end up building neat villages, that´s why i dropped the scale, as You need to set it up more effective with higher numbers, so the numbers don´t matter. It´s only restricting my creativity. :o)
My problem kind of self-resolved the moment i got all my rgular troopers recon armor and charge rifles. Makes dealing with fire and explosives a lot easier, especially with jump packs and the knew sanguaphage abilities.
Thank you all anyways for the advice!
So I tried to cover up the wall with turrets, from every direction, using all kinds of medium turrets side by side separated by a small 1~2 tiles of walls, and many small turrets placed in front of them, surrounded by sandbags acting as decoys, to my surprise they really are capable of repelling some big ass max size raids on their own, or, at least, the majority of them until they run out of bullets, with support from your pawns and mechs it's a lot easier.
It's a huge drain of resources, sure, but it's pretty fun to see, just an idea.
Yes, this is what it came down to in my base. It's like a village with city walls, with turrets and "Encampments" on the inside. Raids just get kited through the gate by my fastest soldier on goi-juice and voila. Next thing you know, 5 leftover downed pigs are squealing while burning in the fire they created themselfes :)
Mmmm bacon......
You wouldn't have any eggs now, would you?
