Mountain is riddled with holes
Hi, I have a question:
I would like to establish a base in the mountain. But every mountain is riddled with holes inside like Swiss cheese, with open zones "inside" the mountain, so it's not possible to lay out a long-range base without many open zones in the open. Was I unlucky or is that just how it is in Rimworld? And is there a mod that can change that?

THANKS!

You picked a bad spot, theres a way you to figure out if theres an opening,i cant remember exactly and you will get an infestation so not worth it,play on peaceful or disable insects

Im not exactly sure about mod on that regard, tho there is always some way to make your moutain more ... full. A few mods give you the option to construct heavy roof or mountain roof to fill the gap for example.

There is also a mod that allow you to "reroll" a map at the start until you get something you want to play with.

(All of this is extremely easy to search for by typing key word on the workshop like "reroll map", or "roof")

About if it's normal, its common to have holes, probably to prevent people to simply make mountain base too beneficial (assuming you learned how to deal with the insect beforehand). Still possible to build walls on every spot that doesn't have a mountain roof tho.

Try to get a map where the mountain runs up against the edge of the map. That is generally where you're going to find true underground base potential. Maps with hills will generally not provide you that. This mod helps a lot:

Meh. Skip the Map Preview. It doesn't work when I use it. Just use this instead.

The 1.4 version can be found in the comments.

I used to use map reroll but I don't think you can remove it without breaking the save if you've used it in that save. Not a big fan of mods that fundamentally change parts of the core game because that is usually the result, but to each their own.

There's also the Geological Landforms mod (by the same person who made the Map Preview mod) that adds a landform called Lone Mountain. It's one big mountain in the middle of the map - perfect for a mountain base.

Never tried it but that sounds like what vanilla should have instead of the impassable mountain tiles.

those open zones are good for solar panels tho. You are limited in power production choice inside a mountain base, so a few extra spots for solar panels are always welcome.

You can build Tox generator loops under mountain tiles and that is the best power production in the game without question. 7400W of continuous power you can put anywhere with the footprint of two geothermal generators. All you need is a mechinator and someone or thing to haul the waste packs to the atomizers.

There's a bug in the game that's good to take advantage of. Select a pawn equipped with a melee weapon. Draft and click on the picture of the weapon beside the draft button and mouse over the mountains. You will see where the holes are. When its solid rock there will be a red circle on your cursor, and when you mouse over a cave it will change to a picture of a knife

Geological formations i think its called has a landscape type called "lone mountain" that might be good for what you want; There will still be caves of course, but those can be turned into defensive features a lot easier than otherwise.
