You don't stop being allied if it drops below 75 though. You only stop being allied if you drop below 0.
You can give them gifts, either by drop pod to their base, or using the gift option when trading.
You can also just do their quests when they pop up.
Having allies is a great thing on the Rim. Especially if they happen to be one of the more technologically advanced factions.
Getting reinforcements from your friends when you're in the middle of being raided is certainly a lot more impactful when they drop pod in with heady armour and weapons, than when it's some tribals coming to your rescue with sticks...
As long as you aren't officially actually hostile with a faction it's actually pretty easy to get good will up with them. The only factions you can't ally with are the ones that are locked at -100.
Don't think about it like you're giving the stuff away for free and all you are getting out of it is a potential new friend. You are ALSO getting the opportunity to dump some of your unnecessary wealth, which will make raids and random events less dangerous as your storyteller will throw weaker things at you.
You're getting friends AND easier events. it's a win win.
Oh, if you choose to do the 'caravan across the planet to the crashed ship' quest, having all those allies is a godsend. Not only are they likely to show up and defend when you're starting up the ship, but it means you'll have plenty of places to trade during the journey.
The one downside is when you have multiple allies who are at war with each other. Counter-raids may decide to attack one another or visiting caravans instead of whatever they showed up to help fight in the first place.
