Image everything you have in flames!!....redesign your base to prevent that from happening. Replace wood with steel or stone if possible. If not, create firebreaks wherever you can.
Barricades do the exact same job as sandbags and can be built out of more common materials.
If raids don't feel like a threat and your pawns don't go in mental breaks anytime soon, you can just learn whatever system you like. Research something that looks interesting and try it out.
Most common things can be discovered by checking the mood of your pawns. If they want something, they'll be unhappy about it. Rimworld is fairly comfy starting out, but your colony will need more things as it grows. So just keep at it, enjoy the curveballs, and remember that dying is part of the fun of these types of games.
