What happened to r/RimWorld?
I went to check it and apparently it turned private. Is this something to do with Reddit turning off support for third party apps?

The mods of the reddit decided to go through with it, so yes it has joined the blackout.

When you go to /r/Rimworld, it says:

[This Subreddit is now private. Click here for information on why we have gone dark.](https://www.theverge.com/2023/6/5/23749188/reddit-subreddit-private-protest-api-changes-apollo-charges)

On June 12th, many subreddits will be going dark to protest this policy. Some will return after 48 hours: others will go away permanently unless the issue is adequately addressed,

Let the children play, it will fix itself soon.

Somehow I imagines the subs sufficiently radical to think of this are also the most Reddit-addicted to go through with it.

If there’s even a 10% drop of daily users beyond the weekend it makes Reddit look bad to advertisers, and Reddit is already unappealing to advertisers because it’s full of redditors, so it’s potentially an effective action.

Well, you have to consider the cancer that is Reddit Gold. If past experience is anything to go by, the current degree of geopolitical astroturfing and the elections next year should leave it swimming in cash.

Especially since Reddit is relatively low-cost compared to other social media. Most of the "heavy" content I see on it is hosted elsewhere.

This and Discord are superior platforms anyway.

They're nuking API access for various third-party applications that would offer alternative ways to browse Reddit.

Or to, I imagine, archive and view deleted posts.

They usually don't allow you to view deleted posts. They just use Reddit's API, which means that Reddit's ads won't show up in those platforms, and NSFW content isn't blocked.

This caused reddit to get into trouble with their shareholders and content regulators, respectively.

I believe the issue isn't that they are "removing" the API access, it's that they are charging for it now. Some amount of money per query or something. For some apps this might not be that much money, for others that make a lot of aggressive calls to the API it ends up being some ludicrous amount of money per day to keep that app alive (I think I read $20 million per day for one app).

TBH, it seems kind of fair, if these apps are spamming their API/servers they should have some way to control that. It's very likely they are losing more to these apps bypassing ads and hammering their service than they would lose from a portion of their subreddits "going private" for a couple days.

I'm assuming this is some regional thing? I heard it mentioned in the news as well. NSFW content isn't blocked on reddit to begin with, at least in the US. It's up to the individual subreddit on how to handle it, some of them initially blur NSFW content and make you click to reveal, but other subreddits don't bother with that at all and just show whatever image/video regardless of content. TIL. I don't use reddit, I don't like echo chambers, so I don't really care what happens to it.

NSFW and political, I imagine. I caught the bulk of the drama for the latter.

Sucks that I'm trying to get back into Rimworld with a big mod list and trying to figure out different things without spending most of my day(s) trying to figure out what others have posted about 6+ months ago. :bloodstain2:
