Inventory
Is there an easy way of identifying how many I have of particular items (an inventory for example)? For example, can I find out how many flak vests I have laying around without hunting for them. It would be great if you could see the quality of the items as well.

Find one, double click on it. To see the quality of each you'll have to select each one individually or zoom in close enough for the quality level to appear...unless there's a mod out there that can do what you are asking.

Usually the reason you would want to see how many of something you have is in order to make up to a certain amount of that thing, and the "do until" bill system has that covered, including factoring in quality and durability. So if you want 3 spare flak vests of at least normal quality above 51% durability, you can set that in a bill and then your colonists will just automatically handle it without you having to pay attention to individual items.

Beyond that, for things that aren't resources, if you want to keep track of what you have it requires creating your own organized inventory system. Store your equipment in one area on some shelves, your resources in another area on different shelves, your bodyparts and meds in another area, etc. Then you can see at a glance what you have without having to check lists or bills. Ever since the shelves were buffed in 1.4 I've actually turned off the resource list on the left of the screen entirely since it's so easy to just look at my steel shelves if I want to know how much steel I have.

This is what I usually do when I am just checking things in my storage.

Another way is to form a caravan and then you can see everything you have. Can be a bit cumbersome if you are a packrat, items accumulate fast if you are getting lots of raids, but it's a single window, and you'll see everything in your base's storage. Sometimes have to mouse over the item's name to see the full quality/percentage of wear. The UI doesn't always have enough characters to cover it.

but of course, there's a mod for everything:
