You need a pawn assigned to cleaning. Note that soil floors are inherently dirty, but not enough to give extra food poisoning chance.

Select a colonist assigned to cleaning, right click a pile of dirt on the floor. It's better to have somebody at high priority cleaning do this automatically. Note that some things cause uncleanliness that can't be cleaned, like butchering tables, if you have a small kitchen don't keep the butchering table in the same room as the stove.

Once an hour or so I have a colonist that hauls stop doing that and force them to clean my base. Works well. You can setup a colonist to just clean and haul or something as well.

Use a cleansweeper. Much better than feeding, housing and mooding a colonist just for cleaning duty

Make your clean higher priority in the Work tab, click the red X icon in the top left of the work tab to change priorities of tasks. Set Doctoring to 1, Cleaning to 1, things like that.

As people have said. Set someone to clean or use a robot.

You can also install a mod called common sense that will make a pawn clearn the area around themselves before they start working.

Here's a nice Vanilla method:

(1) Make a new zone that covers just your kitchen and food ingredients.
(use Manage Areas to add a new zone)
(2) Set your cook to Cleaning priority 1, and Cooking priority 2.
(3) Assign your cook to the zone.

Your cook will now stay in that work zone, clean it completely, and then start cooking. THEY WON'T COOK UNTIL THE KITCHEN IS SPOTLESS CLEAN... Don't forget to release the cook from the work zone when you're done (to sleep xd)

Alternatively, there's a cool mod that forces them to sweep up a bit before starting any job in a room - it's called Common Sense, I think. Useful for researchers and doctors too.

You need a LOT of filth on the floor to affect things like food poisoning in any decent size room, a stove in like a 5x5+ room you really don't need to worry about cleaning before cooking. Just toggle one of your haulers to clean before haul, they will still spend most of their time hauling unless your base is giant with tons of colonists. If there's a bit of dirt or blood in the kitchen when your cook starts cooking you don't really need to worry about as long as it hasn't been building up for weeks without anyone cleaning.

I know a lot of people like mods like Common Sense because they make colonists do things that seem "logical" but the reality is most of what the mod does is redundant, inefficient, or non-performant.

get a cleansweeper, they clean no matter how dirty a room is. they are perfect for keeping rooms impressive and hospitals clean. just get a mechinator and research basic mechtechs

If your colony are slavers, you can also assign a lowly slave with a high priority to Clean.

(My colony has a slave who generally focuses on that all day (with a 1 priority), so the base is kept spotless. On rare occasions, I can still override her if I need the extra muscle, but I'm fine with her just being a housekeeper)

Ah yes. The Rimworld way of doing things. I like how you have forced the chef to live and sleep in the kicthen, doing nothing in his/her life other than cleaning and cooking food.

Haha sarcasm noted. I think you missed the "let the cook out to do stuff" part
Until I get around to having bots and other solutions (which usually comes much later in my runs), I scan my base from time to time to see if any room is in need of urgent cleaning and manually task someone to do so.

There are only a few areas where it's vital, like the kitchen, hospital, recreation room, and bedrooms, so it doesn't take long.

I don’t use many mods, but I consider Cleaning Zone essential. I don’t want to expand my home zone every time something randomly catches on fire, but I don’t want pawns cleaning spaces that don’t need to be cleaned or walking from one end of the base to the other to clean a spec of dust. I leave the cleaning zone set to “inside“ and change it to kitchen or whichever zone when it’s warranted. Cassio ally I set it to the home zone and set everyone to priority 1 cleaning when there’s a bunch of blood or bug guts or whatever.

You might also want to try the ACHTUNG! mod. It has a feature that lets you have a pawn manually clean an entire room.
