Rooms worse than barracks
In my experience when i build rooms for colonists like 6x6 with one sculpture and stone tile my wealth increases quickly. While one barrack can fit all colonist and have spaces for research tailor whatever

It seems that the tiny mood buff isnt worth the huge wealth increase from separate rooms

Bedrooms shouldn't significantly increase wealth unless you are making them out of silver or gold.

Use the raid points chart on the wiki to get an idea of what kind of effect wealth has on things:

https://rimworldwiki.com/wiki/Raid_points

A masterwork small wood sculpture is only worth like 250 silver, which adds like 0.5 raid points on 100% scaling, double that for large sculptures, and most weak enemies are in the 50-60 raid point range.

IIRC a single pawn tends to be worth more than their own bedroom, how many pawns do you have, not counting resources in storage from over-stocking wood from making space for the rooms if their not in mountains

The problem I have with individual bedrooms is the footprint of the base. The more pawns you have, the more bedrooms you need which will increase the size of the base, the terrain you'll have to defend and most importantly: walking distance and time, thus decreasing efficiency overall. Shove them all into a large, very impressive barracks and you are way more efficient while simultaneously having a huge mood buff from very impressive barracks, rec room, beautiful environment, spaciuous room, etc.

Barracks are overall very strong and very efficient not only wealth-wise, but also productivity-wise. That being said, in most of my colonies I make individual bedrooms, at least for like the leaders and such. I want my pawns to be comfortable.

I always used Barracks, but I've started a new run and gone for 5x5 bedrooms instead. As stated above, I find the room needed to be the biggest hindrance, travel times increase and productivity drops. I'm using the 40k mods though, so everyones basically Flash Gordon round the base, or I'd be sticking to barracks.

Just build 2x2 no floor bedroom with Ascetic pawn +5 mood from awful bedroom.

I'm a bedroom guy... and more than that, I make 'em big: 6x8. But I also tend to have a smaller number of colonists in general. I've been putting a set of four shelves in each bedroom... my aim is to distribute my wealth, rather than piling it all into one massive room like I see so many do.

Then I will have 3-wide passages on both sides (if possible) and a backdoor out of each room. And then I will assign the 'best' rooms to the best fighters, where best is defined by closest to the nexus of operations. Mind you, there's all kindsa crap in my hallways... neurochargers, tables/chairs, shelves. But again, the idea is to spread the mats around a bit... so they're not concentrated in any one area other than the nexus, which should theoretically also have good chances of having your best fighters around it.

There's any number of things I do when I'm playing thru a colony, some of them terribly inefficient. For me, unless I specifically started a playthru with barracks as a "thing I do this time"... I will revert to my default 'inefficient' model that's pretty much been my go to since 1.0, and my bedrooms could totally be more efficient. Shrug.

I just keep a "cloakroom" next to the bedroom area, workers can change in to something more battle appropriate there. Do you not get a lot of disturbed sleep modifiers with in-bedroom storage?
whatamidoing Feb 15, 2023 @ 5:42am
I like barracks. Much less space required overall and easier to bring up to the highest quality. I usually give couples (or larger groups, ideology permitting) private bedrooms, though.

Naw. Bed's at the back of the room, shelves by door. The backdoor is forbidden, so no passthrus. The stuff I tend to keep in bedrooms would be armor, weapons, animal pulsers... thrumbo skins, etc fairly high-end stuff. If someone's going in there to get something, it's prolly with my permission and doesn't happen very often.

Most of the time, I keep my pawns wearing 'lite' combat gear, helmets, vests and good dusters outta devilstrand, etc. I'll keep the heavy armor in someone's room... 'cuz again, if I need it bad enough to use it, then it doesn't matter if it wakes someone up.

Anyway, I very rarely see a disturbed sleep that I didn't cause. Especially if you go transhuman, your pawns are up and down all time... and apparently high-quality beds will shorten sleep times as well. So my best pawns get the best rooms.

BTW, I'm a big fan of the smooth rock walls. Takes a bit more time, everything looks so great once it's done. And the walls are very strong that way.

You can't restrict drop offs and pick ups per pawn, though. I had enough trouble having just two clothing areas that shared an item, as when I called for work wear to be dropped in favour of armour, they'd be going back and forth between the different shelves halfway across the base, hugely increasing the time it took to get them battle ready.
Beez Feb 15, 2023 @ 8:40am
Yeah, I got the mod that adds them as buildables man, tis a sweet looking wall tile.
Captain Nerdiepie Feb 15, 2023 @ 10:54am
From a purely practical standpoint, bedrooms are worth it for the cost, but often not so much to be worth it due to:

1) Space ~1/3 of base
2) Massive heating/air conditioning

But I always get them for role playing reasons. 5x5 is enough for very impressive bedroom with masterwork marble sculpture and impressive with good sculpture.

If you don't put in dresser/end table, 4x5 is peak efficiency with just bed and sculpture for same impressiveness as 5x5, but they look ugly as hell
